How To make a quick, pretty good boat/ship
« on: 18 February 2025, 06:12:01 PM »
I'm not real good at tutorials, hard for me to visualize my steps when I can't see pics until posted.  Any help appreciated

1:   fold cardstock in half, draw out you deck plan, cut out

2:  trace out on foamboard, cut out.  You can see I added a raised bow n stern section.

3. Fold card in half, cut out sides in one piece, leave overhang in stern.

4
Cut card strips, glue to inside of sides, in maybe 1/2" intervals.

5.  Glue sides to base, leave stern overhang, and pin

6.  Add deck.  Either the scribed cardstock deck pattern, or in this case, a thin piece of planned wood.

Cut thin straps, glue on outside sides.

8.  Add superstructure n paint

That is pretty effective, especially given its humble beginnings!

I think the instructions work - it certainly gives the key steps to undertake and most importantly the inspiration to try this.

Featherstone used date boxes for 18th century amphibious landings. I’ve used card templates to build balsa landing craft from the small craft bundle.

Thanks for the requested tutorial, Smokey.

Two comments -

The mentioned materials mby Moriarity, very similar packs can be had in USA from craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

And if working in 15 mm, The Virtual Armchair General makes some nice detail parts like ship's wheels and vertical boilers: https://thevirtualarmchairgeneral.com/513-SAG%20Weapons.htm#Ship%20Fittings%20&%20Accessories. Not sure if they have similar items for larger scales but I didn't see them where I looked on their site.
