  • With miniatures, anything is possible!
    • 20mm and then some
I'm looking for suitable rules for skirmish actions of 5-10 troops foor the player and 10+ for the baddies in the setting of TW:2K to refight some of the ideas and notes I made <cough>last century<cough>. My scenery collection is finally getting to the point where that is possible, now to focus on the troops and proper rules.

3x3 table or smaller, 15mm troops preferred, 28mm optional.

Any ideas?

(yes, I don't mind and even prefer skirmishing with 15mm)

Force on Force, or the latest iteration of those rules from Ambush Alley. Available on Wargames Vault now Osprey don't carry them.

I always enjoyed Chris Peers' At Close Quarters- 3rd edition available from Brigade Games. There were a few Wargames Illustrated articles back in the day (early 2000's) with force lists and extra rules that might also be useful

My (totally biased) ecommendation is that you take a look at Frontline Heroes Modern Warfare.

Small skirmishes of 4-15 miniatures per side on a 3x3  gaming board, with player versus player mode, cooperative mode, and solo mode.

There is a Facebook group for the game, a blog, and a YouTube channel explaining the mechanics so you have enough information about the game.

I remember a few years ago (I mean almost 30 years ago...) playing TW:2000 RPG with that yellow front cover. It was a blast back in that days. 🥹

Depending on how much crunch you want, Asymmetric Warfare will handle this perfectly.  Alternatively the forthcoming (free!) Incountry 2.0 (now owned by Echo Dark Studios) will also handle this scale well.

Specter Ops is a decent set, and i just read a pretty cool battle report that used the Fist full of lead rules. https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=131442.630
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Twilight: 2000

A roleplaying game set after the cold war got hot around 1985.

After a limited nuclear exchange and a failed Soviet attempt at getting to the Rhine in seven days, NATO strikes back, but attrition basically breaks down all factions and the players begin their campaign as a rag tag forward unit of soldiers somewhere in Poland after they receive a message from up the command tree stating that everyone is now on their own.

Players now have to survive in a post apocalyptic Central Europe. They can opt to head West and home, make a life out there in the wild East, become bandits/marauders, you name it.

I DMed a campaign about two years ago, using the newer iteration of the game, which I supported the Kickstarter of. It was intense and cool (they were Dutch soldiers trying to get their squad back home from Eastern Poland), but eventually the setting proved too dark for my players and I had to wrap up the campaign early...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Sorry Doug, it's Twilight 2000

I'm so used to typing it as TW:2K I didn't stop to think it might not obvious to others.

You might want to look at Nordic Weasel Games Fivecore and/or Five Klicks from the zone chapter 1 on Wargames Vault.

Best wishes,

What about using the combat rules of Twilight 2000 4th edition? They are made for one character but can be used for a small section. Many dice rolls though.  :)

Thanks - I should have realised :). I bought the game when it first came out - it must have been the seventies? Never played it but it had a lot of background stuff that was interesting and useful. I must have it kicking around somewhere - better get searching. :)

Yes, I have collecte all of the books and supplements bar one I believe, plus some loose articles. I gave it a go in 20mm a few years ago, but with the swap to 15mm I want to give it a better try.

@All, thanks for your ideas, I'll go and readup and check out YouTube for playthroughs and reviews to find out details of the rulessets mentioned.

Came out in 1984 and - depending on the edition - the war broke out in 1996(ish). It's set after the failed last offensive in central Poland or, you know, whereever the GM wants it.

That was one of our Balczakistan fights, and we used the Fistful of Lead core rules from Wiley Games, with the vehicle rules from their Galactic Heroes set (although you could just get the Galactic Heroes set, and you'd be well on your way...).  I heartily recommend you look at these rules!
