Battle of The Alma: Terrain For A Convention Game
« on: March 24, 2025, 09:09:47 PM »
With our local (by Canadian standards - 3.5 hours away) coming up in April one of our group is hosting a Crimean War game. I have repurposed some of my Wagram panels (see here and here for those that are interested) for a British assault on some Russian guns just north of Sebastopol.

The table required 3 more panels to be made:

Since we are trying to incorporate the older river panels, both the representation of the Alma and the location of Bourliouk (where the road ends) will be 'close enough'.

More pictures of the build on my blog: link.

I am currently working on some earthworks to represent the redoubts on the plateau above the Alma.

Very nice indeed! What scale figures will be used, and what rules?
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Thank you everyone.

We will be using Eureka's 18mm figures; the rules are a simplified version of Fire and Fury, with some homemade add-ons.

I didn't order enough gabions from Maverick model to make the redoubt as fortified as it should be to be completely accurate (I should have ordered 3 times as many as I did) so just a bit more to add to the earthworks. I am making a few small vineyards and the village of Bourliouk will be represented by some Battlefield Accessories rural European buildings I did up last year:

My Battle of The Alma table is ready for next weekend:

Both the redoubts and vineyards went quicker than expected.

From the village of Bourliouk, looking south towards the heights and Russian emplacements:

That looks excellent. I recall reading that the redoubts were not very well fortified as such things go so maybe you are Ok as you are.

Incredible! The village is incredible, and brings a great sense of scale to the whole thing, too.

Wonderful table. If the troops are anything like as well done as the terrain that will be a spectacular display.

Thank you everyone. We haven't been able to do a proper run-through yet (Nate has been running the troops through maneuvers at his house without the terrain) so I am really looking forward to seeing all the  troops on the table Friday evening.

I look forward to seeing the after action photos.
I'm not a mercenary. Killing's more of a hobby for me.

Thank you B and M.
I look forward to seeing the after action photos.
Yes, hopefully I don't get so engrossed in the game (or talking to other people) that I forget to take photos.
