How many of us are joining Old World?
« on: April 01, 2025, 03:47:46 PM »
Since there's been so much talk about the new Cathay release for Old World, I was interested to see how many fans of Warhammer Fantasy have decided to jump back over to GW. The new releases seem more aimed at those who enjoyed games like Total War: Warhammer than the oldschool fans, but I'm sure there are plenty who are jumping ship as well.
For my part I'm happy to keep playing 6th ed or Hobgoblin- after getting into historicals the GW prices are too much for me.
Super happy to see people being introduced to the setting through Old World though! And it's great to not have to trawl ebay to find the old models. Just not up to spending £60 (!) on rulebooks alone.

My group is playing FSF in the 'Warhammer Fantasy' setting more or less, so we've taken advantage of buying up some Old World kits - as many of them are far closer to "sane" prices than the usual AoS/40K stuff.  One of our local shops did a 25% off sale, so that brought them down to actually reasonable, etc.

We're not playing Old World at all, and 75% of our armies are still 3D printed...but it's handy to have some decent plastics on hand.

No.  Unless playing with Warmaster figures (which are very much from the Old World) counts...

I never actually left the idea of block based fantasy battles- rules and background stories are a secondary concern (especially that most of those on the market were specifically designed to be compatible with orphaned WHF armies).

The happiest thing for me in the WHF revival is the availability of the old sets, for me those are great conversion fodder for a lots of projects (not necessarily fantasy).

Already have a beastman army which bar the giant matches the new box army, bought the Tomb Kings set that had the rulebook in it, still got my unpainted high elves from isle of blood (and the skaven), got my late dads bretonnians, so nearly good to go, and I never got in AoS. Will be looking to add wood elves and Cathay (and maybe chaos). Really hoping they also make the Nippon and ind factions into real models and armies as they have (finally) done with Cathay. Looking forward to trying to get some games in now.

That ship sailed long before the decision to ax WFB.  We have been enjoying One Page Rules and Dragon Rampant for years and really haven't looked back. For smaller skirmish games we have recently discover Wiley Games as well.  I enjoy the ability to use whatever figures I want in narrative scenarios. Always glad to have more plastic choices on the market though.

I'm locked into 8th ed WFB, along with my campaign players. I feel like 8th could be called 'oldhammer' now. I use nearly every figure manufacturer under the sun to populate the world, much-modified campaign rules and pretty much the same approach to campaign GMing I used in the 1980s!!!!

I'm getting back into WFB, and I always loved the game over most editions. This nostalgia-fuelled project is definitely made easier by the re-releases of certain kits. I don't like many of the very newer generation WFB minis and none of the new minis they've brought out, for aesthetic (and scale creep) reasons. I am populating my forces with older bits found on eBay and such where the re-released stuff ain't to my tastes.

Rules wise, no interest in the official Old World rules. I shall be using Warhammer Renaissance, which ticks all the boxes for me.

Never left the setting.

Changed scales, and use own rules nowadays - well before WF originally got the axe :)

I started venturing back into a Mordheim/6th Ed/ late 1990s-early 2000s Old World about 7 years ago... but gave it up in favor of doing my own thing*. Partly it was the growing realization that 'grimdark' didn't do it for me, and that so many of the 3rd Party 'proxy' figures were very grimdark whilst a lot of the historical ranges were not giving a weird mix of tones. Add in cost of OOP GW figures, the apparently equal cost of those 3rd party figures, and it sort of just died a natural death (and, if I am honest, my desire to have painted Landsknechts was high, whilst my desire to ACTUALLY PAINT Landsknechts was low)

* Still black powder fantasy, but with a Elizabethan/ECW/TYW aesthetic rather than a 'Landsknecht' aesthetic

I think this thread highlights what I'm seeing locally.  People are buying Old World kits, but I haven't seen a single person playing the game.  I think you'll see Old World as a tournament standard for people who enjoy that kind of thing...but I see a lot of people still playing 6th, 8th, WAP, or Warhammer Renaissance, etc...and that excludes home-brew, alternate rules, etc.

The only people I see talking about Old World locally are the 40K players...who jump from game to game every 3 months when GW releases something new, so they're already starting to stop talking about it.

No interest in anything GW produces in terms of canon, games or rules, only the occasional figure transplanted to use with other rules and settings—if it is found reasonably priced, which they rarely are. Chinese lantern airships are tempting, I expect I will get one in the sale bin or second hand in a few years.  I wouldn’t mind finding 2-4 of Bretonian knights. I have only two  and would like to have a full lance to deploy for my Mallorian Arthur games. The last time I looked they were outlandishly expensive.

I wanted to get back into the Old World, I’m a huge Orcs and Goblins fan.

GE with their made to order buy now or lose your chance! which makes ZERO sense, killed it for me. I wanted the old wyvern model, but the timing was bad. Well, now I’m not buying Old World models at all. I have the books, that’s enough.

It’s a pass from me.

Those were the days!.  I would also be happy if they reverted back to their focus on the hobby from the 80s rather than the current corporate environment.  But I digress.
