Painting ‘pens’?
« on: 12 April 2025, 12:21:22 PM »
Hi,

I’m currently at the start of a very long painting project in 28mm.
It’s a Slave Revolt army.

I’m giving a lot of the figures captured Roman shields.
I’m trying to achieve some graffiti style writing on these shields, you know the type of thing, “Romans go home!”
Or perhaps some naughty words… lol

The trouble is I’m not confident enough to hand paint this small detail.
Is there any type of pen that I could get that would work?
I’d need it in white.

I’ve attached a picture of the lovely transfers that LBMS do, which unfortunately are pro Roman.
I’m obviously after hurling insults at Romans!

So ... the acrylic paint pens that you can get wouldn't be fine enough for this sort of thing. But I think you could get good effects with white ink (very cheaply available from The Works, etc., in the Cass Arts range) and either a dip pen or even a rounded cocktail stick. There might be some kind of fine drawing pen that can work with acrylic inks too (I'm not sure).

White ink's surprisingly opaque, and a bit of 'fading' or translucency would be quite appropriate in any case. You could also add a tiny bit of sepia ink or something to make it an off white.

Thanks matey!

I’ve just come back from my local model/wargame shop, I found these fine 1mm pens!

I’ll give it a try and give feedback.

Looking to see how yours works out vs the thicker AK pens.

Sorry!
I’ve just remembered to insert the picture of the damm thing!

It’s a good bit of kit.
But not good enough for what I want.
Too opaque as mentioned above. And even at 1mm it’s too thick.

I may try the cocktail stick idea…

I was going to ask for a photo! Nice.

Years ago I used toothpicks/cocktail sticks - and eventually moved on to better quality Kolinsky fine brushes, but the sticks did work. I was making models at the time, and doing cockpit lines was what I used them for. Masking fine tape and brushes still are better, I think…
