Dragonfly VTOL (now released)
« on: December 11, 2009, 07:03:13 AM »
Since the building part of the contest is now over, I'll be posting more updates here.

So, I couldn't sit still, and started with the much-requested 3-barreled minigun:

Once finished, I'll try and mold it, but since the barrel assembly is a bit fiddly, I doubt that there will be more than a few castings. We'll see.

Edit: Oops, wrong board. Can anyone please move this up to workbench, please?

This is a fantastic build. Are you making this available to the public?. Would love to get my hands on one.

Thanks, guys!

Yes, it will be available in January. I am still working on a few weapon options and the helicopter version. We'll see if I have them ready by Christmas...

Three barrels! What do you mean three barrels!? MORE!!!  lol

Looking good (as I've told several times) and I promise to order one under pain of death.

Damn sexy Yar! Triple barrel is perfect, but I can see the challenge in casting it.

Here you go:

A little progress on the gun suspension (nothing really visible, though), and in the second and third picture you can see the six-barrel assembly for the minigun somewhere near the tail. Oh, and a very early stage of the rotor, of course.

It is just lovely. How long is it? (trying to work out if it'll fit in the hanger I'm currently building.

Length from nose to tail is 155 mm, width at the engines is 90 mm.

Here is the top-down view of the final model again:

Grid is in cm, so you get a good impression of the measurements.

nice

won't the rotorblades be difficult to cast in resin?

Yes, probably. I am considering either supplying them just as polystyrene strips, or inserting a wire core into the mold before casting. The long, thin blades alone will most probably warp, but I hope that the wire will provide the necessary stability.

wouldn't steel strips be cheaper?
I guess anyone who buys resin casts will have a power drill of some sort?

anyway, it is a very good idea to have the blades separate
