My Iron Cross russian project army
« on: June 10, 2025, 10:42:49 PM »
Hi,

I quite recently bought Iron cross ruleset, really liked it, so I started to work on forces to play it.

For now I made an american normandy force (not completed yet), and before starting to work on germans I wanted to build a russian army. I also plan to replay the africa campaign with DAK and 8th army.

The scale choice is "heroic" 20mm (something more like small 25mm I'd say), using valiant miniatures for german, british and american,  old hard plastic esci for 8th army (with some valiant minis too). And since the valiant range is limited, I also started to work with 3D printed figures and 1/72 vehicles  to fill the gaps (russian, DAK figures; all nations tanks and vehicles).

I this topic I'll show you my work in progress russian army, using 3D printed figures, and a mix of plastic and 3D printed tanks.

I'll take more pics tommorow, but here's some pics already. First my army HQ (3D printed figures, resin) :

I made a paint scheme/manual based on these first figures, wich I'll apply on the whole army.

My tanks : plastic PSC T34 76, and hybrid (FDM printed hull) T34 85 :

The ISU 152 (pegasus), single piece (considered rare in the game).

Last work tonight, I based 2 mortars teams (fdm printed figures, resin printed mortar) :

To be continued. I'll post pics of the artillery and infantry tommorow.

That’s going to be quite a collection. Nicely curated  :)

I really like Iron Cross. My Western Desert forces are set up for it. Shame the rules set came out, blazed so briefly, then fizzled out unsupported or promoted in any significant way after a very short period. Good to hear someone else has picked it up  8)

Your Soviet Army is nicely taking shape!

Good rules selection we use it (and 1914j with 6mm and 10mm sized armies.

BTW GEGs have confirmed on the Facebook Page (email to me not on Facebook) that they are working on a new updated version, also an Australian Group spent quite a while expanding the rules with Artillery, Aircraft, fortifications and unit lists from 1939 to 1945…

thanks for the comments

iron cross is a good game, easy to learn and fast. I tried several WW2 games before, they had their qualities too, but they required a lot of involvement from the players.

On the GEG website you'll find PDFs to fill the gaps in the orbats especially.

Nice looking force - I particularly like the look of the mortar teams.

We've enjoyed the Iron Cross rules - they are very interactive and fun - the command system works well. A second edition would be good, as they do leave quite a few gaps.

The 1914 WWI rules we enjoyed less, the mechanisms seemed to apply less to the period and larger scale of the game.

Hi Fred, interesting feedback on 1914, we found the need to allocate command points pre-turn reflected the Great Wars less lexible command control quite well, we enjoyed 1914 (BUT did find the Cavalry movement unclear until we contacted GEG).

It was the bit that units got to go again and again in a turn felt wrong (to us) for the size of forces vs in Iron Cross when vehicle or squad having multiple activations felt fine. Which very much shows the subjectivity of players vs rules!

A totally fantasy figure. A tribute to the fevered imagination of the creators of the film "Enemy at the Gates"  lol

Yes, of course. It's just a game. But I still dream of seeing an NKVD regiment in blue caps on the gaming table)))

This is an officer of the NKVD troops (blue cap).
A commissar (political leader) in the army looks different (like a regular officer, but he has stars on the sleeves of his uniform).
