Hearts' Horus Heresy
« on: June 13, 2025, 07:01:47 PM »
I've wanted to give the Horus Heresy rules a go for a little while now but have been taking my sweet time getting stuff together. I finally have a nice little Zone Mortalis force to show off.

This is 750 points of Word Bearers. It's mostly the box set Age of Darkness, though I 3D printed the despoiler arms and added the Legion specific Praetor. The Gal Vorbak is just a box of the newish Chaos Possessed.

The Gal Vorbak were a bear to paint. I think they turned out great but I really struggled with them. I found them super difficult to batch paint. Every time I thought I had all of the black details done, I found something I missed. I did most of them in one go but basically had to go back with the full palette for each individual figure.

Like most of my stuff lately these are all "Marine Juice" Paint Jobs. It really does contribute the whole, Quantity is a Quality of its own, or however that goes.

Since putting all these away though, I got the urge to finish another figure and have added a Contemptor. This puts the list at just about 1k depending on options. I have a ton more figures to churn through but I'm super proud of these.

Nice work, have you got any zone mortalis specific terrain to go with them?

Yeah, I'm working on it now. I've got a full 3D printed set that matches the Gallowdark set. I'm gonna post about it once I get a little more painted on it. One of the guys I game with has a set of the official plastic stuff.

Roboute Guilliman?

I feel I am quite resistant to space marines and especially to all the primaris nonsense. But as I watch your  bunch of marines I start to think about small hobby project - heresy era armours in Badab War chapters colors.

It's funny you say that. It's actually what sort of got me in to it. Now i had a bunch of 40k stuff anyway but years ago now, back when that Betrayal at Calth box was new, I played a game that Keith Stine (Disposable Heroes author) ran for me and a few friends at a convention. It was a similar scope. Badab War. Super interesting approach. Less about "my army beats yours" and more of a Historical Gaming approach. Changed my opinion totally.

I got my butt kicked the other day. I finally managed to get a game in of HH. We played 2.0 the day after 3.0 was officially released. In no particular order here's some photos from the game. In short, we played one of the scenarios out of the 40k Boarding actions book (which is lovely) on a table my buddy Paul put together. He's up to something like 4 sets of the Gallowdark style plastic GW terrain. All of this was painted by another friend, John. I lost by points pretty drastically. I was also more or less tabled on turn 5. My plasma marines never made it to the table and the Gal Vorbak were charged before they could do much. Either way it was wonderful to actually play with them.

It's my understanding that these guys are probably going to play 2nd edition until the Zone Mortalis rules get officially ported to 3rd in November so I'm happy to keep learning. I mostly had Paul look at my army list and tell me what to roll but I felt by three turns in I could make meaningful decisions without getting bogged down in minutia of the rules themselves. It will take me a few more games to wrap my head around some of the mechanics though.

The models look great, and the 3d printed stuff looks like a perfect fit. Table looks pretty fab too; after it was a full game mode in 30k, I always thought that boarding actions should have been in 40k a lot sooner than they were. Anyway, good job! :)

I've been avoiding doing my Vorbak's squad. Looks fiddly to paint indeed.

These are fantastic pics and congrats on a nicely painted, ever expanding army.

Thanks for the compliments, all.

I don't want to scare you off at all but those are some of the least enjoyable figures I've painted in a long time. Now, I do better with hard lines, neatness, and defined surface materials. These tend to blend those things together with some room for interpretation. YMMV dramatically. I can probably crack out another tactical squad in an hour or so, these took the better part of a week of evening paint sessions.
