Boer War Project -Boer Artillery, 75 mm Creusot and crew
« on: 15 June 2025, 09:29:35 AM »
Hello again,

More images. This time Boer 75 mm Creusot quick firer. The crew are Zulu War British from the Foundry range with head swaps from their Boer War range. They are painted to reflect the uniform of the Transvaal Staats Artillerie. There are pictures out there of some wearing their blue patrol style jackets, others in their working kit.

The gun is Old Glory and is quite an unusual design. One of the first auto recoil  QF pieces and supplied by the French company, Creusot.

Work in progress on a Creusot or Long Tom 155 mm piece and crew as well as a Krupp 75mm.

Hope you like this. The Second Boer War is not much seen as a game topic. A shame in my view , as it can generate a lot of interesting options, from skirmish to big battle. I am trying to do my bit.

I have a project in my queue for the Battle of Magersfontein 1899, with the Boer Scandinavian Corps vs the Black Watch so I need some inspiration to get going. I will follow your progress with great interest  ;)

Now that sounds interesting! Have you got the Helion title on Magersfontein? Lots of inspiration there. The fight between the Black Watch and the Scandinavians was of course really fierce. Apparently doing a field walk of the site today will still yield bullet casings and other debris.

I am working on some converted Highlanders just now, albeit for the later guerilla period. So no sun helmets, but slouch hats, puttees and bandoliers.

Looking good. Would you use death in a dark continent?

You have a good source there then. I am afraid I have no Swedish! Be interested to see how your project goes armed with such excellent materials. I thoroughly recommend the Helion book. Lots of detail and indeed images not often seen, such as the artillery bombardment ahead of the assault.

Thanks! Not sure. I have it, but the author I think takes the view that DitDC is more about native v European whereas the Boer War is a fight between European style forces. That being said I do like these rules, so you never know.

Dabbling with smaller skirmishing just now. Just played out a One Hour Wargame skirmish game of Boer raid on a Zulu settlement looking to steal cattle as happened in 1902 . Intercepted by some British infantry. Gave a fast and believable game.

Thanks again,

Scott

Great work on the figure conversions & paint-jobs and also great work on the basing with its terrain!  I have a small but fantastic looking “South African War” blockhouse I don’t get to use often enough, but seeing your project advancing may inspire me to dig it out along with the one box of nicely painted Boers I’ve been storing in my hobby closet for my brother for something like 15 years…

Hello Mad Guru! Praise indeed. Been a big admirer from afar of your  own projects. First rate stuff and very inspirational. Has actually been of use in finding a painting style which is suitably muted for a dustier clime.

Blockhouse based games are fun. Lots of options, including trying to get Boers to assault one or get away from one, over the barbed wire and into a free area. I would encourage getting those Boers out.

I have about six blockhouses ( I am that sad) and would like to do a game about a mounted infantry sweep of Boer guerillas who have to get through that line. Could be pretty dramatic.

I will see if I can get some pictures sorted of a blockhouse game.

All my best

Scott
