The Kenshin Ryu Scrolls Campaign
« on: July 12, 2025, 06:09:05 PM »
Started the first scenario of the Kenshin Ryu Scrolls Campaign.
(Campaign rules attached below)

SCENARIO 1 – AMBUSH
A group of students from the Kenshin Ryu are escorting that school’s teaching scrolls to an adjoining province, where they will be presented to another ryu. A bandit leader has learnt of this, and, wishing to capture the scrolls for ransom, sends some of his men to intercept them.

RESULT: It looked like it was gonna be a route of the Bandits, their teppos couldn’t find their targets in the fading dusk lights. However, once the bandit samurai threw down their shoddy rifles they were able to get a few Koryu kills with their katanas. The end result was never really in question though and the scrolls have been passed along.

Questions from the session for anyone else who’s played Ronin:
1) Initiative - when do the players reveal if they’re Enhancing the Initiative roll? Is it done simultaneously or priority order? Some other way?
2) Withdrawl - if a model moves into base contact with an enemy, then the enemy withdraws, can the model not follow-up? The rules read like following up is their Move action, but what if they already moved? Similar question about attacking… if they opt to attack a withdrawing model in the Move Phase, do they still get an attack in the Combat Phase?

Aha! Another player who's doing the Kenshin Ryu scenarios!

1) Initiative – I'd just do it simultaneously. Saves a lot of trouble, and unlike defence/attack enhancement where the order matters, initiative enhancement isn't one of those things where you can mind-game your opponent.
2) Withdrawal – The assumption I'd have is that if you withdraw from an enemy that has already activated, then they do not have the opportunity to move in pursuit. It's a fairly niche use case, but it could be useful to withdraw if you have supporting troops further behind, who might gang up on an enemy who follows up.

Yeah, we've been dong Initiative simultaneously. I just wasn't sure if I missed something.

For the Withdrawl, again, that's how we've been playing it, but what about the attacks? If a model attacks an opponent that attempts to move away, does that model also still get an attack in their combat phase? Hmm... I guess it would mean another model moved into base with them then being in base to base they would then be involved in battle during the combat phase. I don't think the game would allow for two models to be in base to base, but no combat resolved.  I think the answer must be yes.

I also have En Garde which looks to make a number of changes to the system. Have you incorporated any of those? So far, we're just playing Ronin as written.

I actually ran that campaign in En Garde! with some Ronin modifications rather than the reverse. It's been a while so I can't remember many specifics beyond that.

We played the next two scenarios.

SCENARIO 2 – ASSASSINATION
The Bandits have hired Ninja to slay the Sensei of the Kenshin Ryu in his home, to try and avoid recriminations against them. The ninja sprang their attacks while the sensei was meditating over the scrolls in his grotto.

RESULT: The sensei’s students quickly killed the ninja leader and held the rest off so he could retain the scrolls and move to safety.

SCENARIO 3 – DUEL
Kenshin Ryu students confront the Bandit Leader in a local village, and outraged at the attacks on their ryu, the senior student present challenges him to a duel in the outskirts of town.

RESULT: The bandit leader knew a direct duel with the Koryu senpei was a losing bet, so parried and dodged until he could back into protection of his bandits. Attempting a break for the forest during the swirling chaos, his heavy armour betrayed him and he was chased down by a couple students.
