Anglo-Dutch Wars, Fleet Review - The English Fleet.
« on: 26 July 2025, 09:06:48 AM »
In a series of posts I have been reporting on games run by a friend of mine recreating battles from the First Anglo-Dutch Wars using his marvellous collection of 1:1200 models and in my latest post we get to the see the English fleet of circa 1666 in its entirety, with a follow up post next doing a similar fleet review for the Dutch.

As you will see the attention to detail on these models is a pleasure to see and like me you might like to see the fleet as a whole on review.

Stunning work. I thought about gaming this period about 2 years ago but wouldn't be able to do justice with my painting to models in this scale and detail . I thought about a smaller scale but moved to pastures new. I still have both sets of rules from the "League of Augsburg" but see you played the Pike and Shot Society's "General at Sea". What scale of fleet are these aimed at and do you have any comparison to the other rulesets?

I thank you on behalf of Steve whose collection this is.

It would be unwise of me to comment on playability or comparison of General at Sea having not played them myself, but I have a comment from Steve, whose AAR’s I have reported on and who is a much more reliable source, commenting as I have quoted here on the rules and the next game he is planning to portray using them;

“. . the collection was designed to fight the largest battles of the 2nd ADW using the General at Sea scale of one stand representing 3 - 4 ships. I have slightly more than is needed for The Four Days Fight and St James’ Day Fight, and just enough Dutch for Lowestoft.

I am setting up the next game based on the opening moves of Lowestoft where the White Squadron under Sir Christopher Myngs competed with the Dutch for the weather gauge. He won on that occasion but failed in similar circumstances at the beginning of day four of the Four Days Fight and was mortally wounded. I thought it would be interesting to have a line of battle engagement next.”

I hope that provides a bit more insight.

Cheers
JJ
