[Review] Warlord's plastic Sd.Kfz.250

Heyhey, it's been a while since I last wrote a review of a plastic kit, even longer since I did one for a Warlord kit. Recently I got to work with one of the three(!) plastic sets Warlord released for the Sd.Kfz.250. I love the look of this vehicle, and it's pretty interesting how Warlord put out three boxed sets for that, to cover all sorts of variants of this versatile vehicle.

So I built the thing, painted it and wrote something up.

Factory sprayed dunkelgelb was introduced before the 250 Neue entered production but after the Alte was produced so either dunkelgelb or dunkelgrau looks good on them. I have tried, in the past, to pick apart the production history of the various variants to try to work out which ones appeared in the Alte and Neue bodies (or both) but it's an obscure subject to say the least (easier with the 251). But, like you, I'm a big fan of the little 250 - it's a great vehicle and you've done a good job on the model.

Given the dispersed nature of German wartime production - was there even a clean cut-over from Alte to Neue production?

@Rick: That is an interesting question. I mean, a lot of the variants were field modifications anyway, as far as I understand the situation.

@fred: Thank you! As for the Neue version (Ausf.B, I read, but who knows if that was official nomenclature then?) I found that the first vehicle appears to have been produced in late  June of '43 by Demag. Rubicon does a kit of that I think, but to be honest I'd almost always go for the Alte variant over the Neue. It just looks so much nicer.

@Ragsta: Cheers, sir! Yeah, I agree. A typical representative of the "small stuff" you don't necessarily see a lot in battle games, but in skirmish games like Chain of Command it's something you'd see on the table. And for that, it's cool to have a 28mm variant, because in 15mm it can get a bit small for such a vehicle.

 Great review, it looks like it would be very easy to put together too. I appreciate that the tracks are molded already, having to put the Tamiya tracks together is a real bitch.

Cheers! Oh yeah, it goes together perfectly nicely. Tracks are very reminiscent of how you assemble tracks on Space Marines Rhinos and such. I glued'em onto the wheels, but for ease of painting (and mudding-up) I left the whole wheel-y stuff off and only glued'em on in the end.

Good point about the Alte models just looking better - the Neue models designed for ease of production are pretty ugly.

I have a swarm of these in 10mm, if you think the 15mm one is small!

@Rick: That is an interesting question. I mean, a lot of the variants were field modifications anyway, as far as I understand the situation.

Some certainly were field mods, some started off that way then were factory converted but most, surprisingly, weren't - especially the ones that mirror 251 variants - most of those would have been factory modifications or factory produced upgrades (command variants that switched from the Rahmen (bedframe) aerial to the 2 or 3 aerials were a factory kit, I believe, then standard fit on the Neue model). Or the 250/9 Stummel that mimicked the 251/8 ausf C/D Stummel - as far as I'm aware this was never fitted to the Alte version but does appear on the 250 Neue. It does get a bit complicated.
