Recommend AWI rules

I've really been enjoying building up my AWI collection over the last couple of years, but I'm in two minds about the ruleset. I've got limited table space, and want to keep to 28mm. I've enjoyed Black Powder, but it's very vanilla, and Land of the Free, but that seemed to get very slow when there were more than about half a dozen units on each side. So, suggestions?

We're playing tweaked Ravenfeast rules and it works like a charm (for smaller as well as bigger games) - it's fun as hell, balanced and always a good time! I'll attach all our house rules.

Yeah, I looked at that and concluded the same thing. I clearly started in the wrong scale, but I do enjoy painting those Foundry, Perry, and Brigade Games minis...

Sharpe Practice is great! I can't tell if your models are based individually or not, but they're multibased then you can just use dice to track casualties.

They're multi-based. I did have a game of SP recently, and that was good. Probably looking for something a bit more 'big battle'. Again, I know, trying to want everything at the same time...

Yes, I think so.  There are some similarities, but it's differnt enough to be different.  They are one of our go-to rules for the AWI.  In fact, our last game (see my "AWI Stuff" thread) was Valour & Fortitude.

Going back over 25 years, we've played these rules for AWI, in approximate order of our first game with each...

Fields of Honor
Patriots & Loyalists
Rebels & Redcoats (a hex-map and cardboard counter game I converted to a minis game)
Black Powder
Liberty or Death
Saratoga Soldiers (which I will help run a game with at the Advance the Colors convention in October)
Valour & Fortitude

We've narrowed it down to Black Powder, Saratoga Soldiers, and Valour & Fortitude, with the latter leading the pack.

With Valour & Fortitude being designed with 28mm figures in mind (we play with 20mm figures, and reduce distances/ranges by a third), you can fit 2 or 3 brigades a side on a 6' x 4' table.  Any more than that, I'd use an 8' x 6' table.  With 20mm minis and the reduced distances, we've had 4 and/or 5 brigades on a 6' x 4' table.

That's my 2 cents, anyway...
