Hello All,
The picture shows a recent Hardwar game my friends and I ran. We are supporters of the new Kickstarter from Modiphius but we really wanted to see how the full rules would feel. One person had the older rules from Stratos and we broke these out. We expect the Modiphius version will be very similar.
I made two 29 C (C = the point system in the game) forces from published units and found proxy models for all of them. The miniatures are from Catalyst games BattleTech, Khurasan, and Death Ray Designs, and some lovely terrain from Brigade. The game area was 3x3.
Hardwar is a fun skirmish level game. We enjoyed making combos with the attack dice. We discovered the critical system buried in the dice mechanics held some surprises. A good combo of dice can take your units down fast. To me it felt like "golden BB" rules found on in some naval games without the extra tables. There were some "big boom" moments.
I think the game plays better with smaller unit counts on the board. We had 15 units per side and I should have cut it down to make the turns go faster. If you're playing high point games, I encourage bringing the bigger C4 units. We only had a couple of them, but they were scary but still not overpowered. We discovered the powerful Longinus tanks hit very hard but had weak defenses. The balance in the game was good.
I also think the game would be very easy to play as a unit = platoon style game. The unit has a firepower rating and abilities that degrade when the unit takes damage. It can easily represent loss of individual units within the stand.
I had this fun idea (I still won’t do it) of using 3mm tanks on bases for the tanks but keeping the mechs as they were. The mechs would represent war machines like Titans from 40K. Keep the rules the same and have fun.
Enjoy
