Fytzer's Saga
« on: 25 August 2025, 09:46:38 PM »
A small project log to log progress with various armies for Saga (and other wargames).

First up is my Chivalry Scottish Warlord.

I'm close to finishing the pikes and foot knights. I've also got some cavalry that might beat them to the finish line however. More updates to come.

Yes indeed!
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss

Excellent work.

Getting close to finishing the mounted crossbows. These are one of the mercenary options, and they had their debut at the Grand Melee. They're a good little unit to have for the Scottish.

There's still a bit of work to finish them. Annoyingly some of the leather colour bled on a couple of models, so I'll have to go back and re-paint a fair bit.

I really need to finish the pikes now.

These look great.

The reds and greens really liven up the models.

How have your mounted crossbowmen fared in your games?

They've done alright. I played them with Scottish pikes, which led to a certain tendancy to bunch up my foot units around the one mounted unit. Looked a bit odd, but that's SAGA. They work very well with Drive Home the Nail, as it gives a total of 4 bonus attack dice, which can really help the combats get very brutal. Their mobility was also useful as they could support one flank, then the next turn switch and move to the other to provide support when needed. I think they killed one or two enemies with their shooting, but multiple opponents spent a lot of time and energy shooting at them: none came close to wiping or even knocking off the SAGA dice. Given that the Mounted Crossbows give out the bonus 2 dice even if there's only one left, it didn't really affect their value. Plus living rent free in my opponents' heads saved the pikes from getting shot, leading to more pikes in combat, which is always good.

I might try running them with the Auld Alliance version, where I suspect their speed will be even more useful.

they look outstanding, the conversation between the middle two is superb.
Thanks, but full credit goes to Andrew and Eli of Medbury Miniatures. They are swiftly becoming my favourite sculptors, the models/stls they pump out month on month are exceptional.

Thank you! The curse of taking photos now is seeing all the errors that I've made. More work required!
