Astropod
« on: 06 September 2025, 11:44:59 AM »
I was in Sports Direct and found some cheap toys that work well as sci-fi terrain. The range is called Astropod and there are eight different sets. The main pod will make a very good fuel storage unit or some such. You also get other things inside them and one of the best i have picked up so far is the station builder set. This set has extra pieces that allow you to connect multiple pods together. For the £5 per set i think they are really good things to have. Each pod also has what some might call male and female parts on each end to allow them to connect to each other allowing you to extend them for larger structures.
The Sports Direct online shop has six different sets listed link below.

Has anyone else bought these and if so what are your thoughts on them.

They do tend to get some good stuff in.
 Action figures too.
They also have the Halo miniatures game in by Mantic at half price £30 which is not too bad for eight miniatures and terrain.

A Venn diagram of wargamers and athletes would have some of us in both sets  ;)

The only way I can conceive of a wargamer in a sports shop is if a) he's wandered in by mistake or b) he's looking for comfy, stretch-waist trousers to cover the ale belly!  lol

Modern wargamers are very different thanks to the Nerdsploitation that has made Nerd stuff much more accessible and mainstream.

I see a lot of Social Media Wargamers are jacked.

Wargaming/miniature painting (at least toward the Warhammer side of the hobby) is popular enough that influencers are starting to specialize – there are Warhammer fitness people on instagram who will sell you a workout program to 'make you look like a space marine' or whatever. I can't see myself paying someone to tell me to pretend my barbell is a thunder hammer or something, but to each their own.

I have to go into town later today (I like to do it at least once a season - I see it as outreach work), and I'm going to go into Sports Direct to see if they have any.
I'll confess, I'm nervous.
I'm led to believe that Sports Direct, despite the name, isn't a real sports shop but the kind of place that...how do I say this delicately...the kind of people who support Tommy Robinson and raising flags on street corners go.
I'm not sure what scares me more - sports types or Robinson supporters.
Wish me luck.

Nope. No Astropods in our Sports Direct.
Loads of scratters and townies looking at massive lurid coloured trainers, and nondescript 'club' music that says 'if you don't like this then fuck off because we don't like you'.
But no Astropods.

A shame on the astropod front, but a win for you on the taste front methinks  :D lol

Glad you survived, Dice Roller, it's a trying experience venturing into any urban jungle these days without having to also navigate around its denizens.
