Want to make small cardboard gunboat - first time... help!
« on: January 10, 2010, 02:54:18 AM »
While browsing this 15mm VSF http://15mmvsf.bagofmice.com/vsf/vsfpage.htm site espessially these section http://15mmvsf.bagofmice.com/vsf/builder_landship.html , I had an idea to make a small gunboat for my 15mm solders. But the only problem is, I havent done this before. (I am only 2 year in miniature painting (2mm, 1/300, 6mm, 1/6000 ) and only 2 monts in 15mm scale!)
Is there are ant tutorials or something?

wouldn't know about tutorials, but the simplest way to start would be styrodur (styrofoam) and cardboard

it is easy to cut and to sand, inert for any paint (apart from dissolving enamel) and You can dump it and start anew if You are not content
just cut the main features with a sharp knife, sand it to shape and paint it
You can do flat portions by glueing any thickness of cardboard on

most important is not to spend too much doubts and just start
good luck  ;)

As former user suggests, just go for it. Look on the internet for something that inspires you and give it a go. If you can make a cardbard box then you can make anything. Sketches are invaluble, also try and make something that is real first because you could probably get the plans from the www somewhere.

Most of all, have fun and don't lose heart.

Use the search facility on here to find examples of other people's work and use their ideas.

There have been a few gunboats (at least 1 in the build something contest)
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

Check out Hobby Co. balsa wood section... they have a lot of plastic and metal rods too. Even just interesting pieces of junk. When you put together the materials you work with it might make it easier to figure out what you want the end result to be!

Also, get pictures! Lots of pictures! This helps your brain define what a gunboat might look like and feed your imagination to build something unique :) The sketches are a great idea too.

By the way, what is it that you find so appealing about 15mm?

Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Here are some articles on my blog about boats scale 28mm, you just need to make them a little bit smaller!  lol

Take a look at Reviresco:

http://www.tin-soldier.com/

There are boats there scaled for either 15mm or 25mm.  Even if you'd rather design your own, there are parts for sale that would help finish out your gunboat, though I'm not sure how many parts are available for 15mm sizes.
Sailors have more fun!
