Treaded Landboat - Work in Progress
« on: 10 January 2010, 07:23:18 PM »
A while back, I rescued this giant toner cartridge from a print shop, thinking it'd make something neat.  After doing a few sketches, I decided to make something in the vein of an armored train, but with tank treads - a troop transport and gunboat type of thing.

I started last night by putting in pieces of basswood to create the basic tread shape.

I then added some basswood strips to the sides to create areas on which soldiers can stand.  The bottom goes all the way across; the top has a section in the middle open from which ladders will descend to the bottom platform.

I plan to have the majority of the SIDES of the treads armored, so I've not put much detail beyond the opening area, but there I've put in some spoked washers and pieces of matte board.  I'll be adding more details there later.

I added some beams underneath for stability (everything has been attached by superglue gel).  The ones that extend out will likely have some sort of pulley or chain attached to them.

That's it for now!  More work to come.

Check out THE CROGAN ADVENTURES, a historical adventure graphic novel series available from your local bookstore or comic shop (or, of course, Amazon).  I make 'em.

Looking absolutely fabulous. One thing though:

A while back, I rescued this giant toner cartridge from a print shop, thinking it'd make something neat.

Did you empty the cartridge properly before embarking on the build? Otherwise, you might be in for a world of hassle if it is ever breached.

Brilliant , but shame the opposition makes those  :-[ none of the types I've looked at have any use for gaming with the exception of a drum housing which will be used as a lift shaft.

I hope we don't see a front-page story in the Telford Thunderer about a serious break-in and theft at a major place of learning  ;)
