Adobe holiday project
« on: January 14, 2010, 06:14:54 AM »
Well, this one wasn't really planned but it took a life of its own when I started finishing off some other adobe buildings. It's in 28mm scale.

If it looks a little fancy it's because it's the house of richer folk for the Bandidos to steal a daughter/gold/stock from! It started off as a garrison/small prison...

Unfortunately I haven't got any Banditos finished :( Around the back is a little wagon wheel and a shrub. Clay jars are made from jewelery beads, fence is HO scale.

The rest is scratch built.

Let me know what you think, hombres (and chiquas) ;)

It looks fantastic  :-* ... especially the painting of the walls and plastering looks very nice. How did you do it and what plaster did you use for it???

Thanks for sharing the photo ... and now you need to paint some bandidos for it  :D

Very nice indeed  :-*

I do like the touch of the blue door, it brings the whole model out.

That's lovely Christian.
An interesting and unusual shaped building, and with lots of lovely attention to detail.
Not bad for an accidental build!  ;)

I really like the small details which bring the model alive - the lantern, balcony, blue door etc. Wonderful stuff ;D

Wow! Thanks for the feedback guys :) I'm really flattered.

I guess when I'm building one thing I'm often thinking of what to do next. The funny thing is I have probably doted over this one more than any other building...

Here's a bit on how I did the plaster:

Well, the plaster was a little bit of a fluke. I usually keep dabbing on layers of watered down Spakfilla (which is a white, fluffy filler) mixed with some PVA and some water.

It can get a little too lumpy (which I didn't like on other buildings) so this time I started with one fairly watery layer of plaster mix, then let it dry out and used a paddle-pop stick as a spatula to get the bigger "spreads" of plaster on the walls once the left over stuff had dried a bit.

This way I had a mix of different textures: the underlying cork, smoother plaster, and rougher plaster.

For colours, I used a tub of Jo Sonja's "Yellow Oxide". The closest colour I can think of in hobby terms is Snakebite Leather with some yellow in it.

Then, I mixed in about 50/50 Yellow Oxide and White and started dabbing that on to the surface unevenly. After that, a 40/60 Yellow Oxide and White, and finally pure White dabbed on to the surface. It's importasnt that you do this fairly unevenly to complement the surface of the building: dabbing gives it a rougher texture which goes with the plaster. This has all been painted with a fairly hefty artist's brush.

I think the flash has actually spoiled a bit of the effect!!

Anyway, I am correcting a Cantina and doing an interior for it so that will be on show next. I've also got a small granary going too.

Basically, the techniques I used here are a culmination of techniques I've picked up from all the wonderful examples on this forum, with a little bit of trial and error, and a personal touch.

Thanks and enjoy!

Not just the blue door but the distressed blue door. Very very nice indeed.

Great work mate - top job!  :-*

Love the door too. I always feel it is these little things that make the difference between a good model and a great one.

Yeah, neice.  I like that sunken wall where the balcony is, and the door and tile.

I'm stealing that idea for Khartoum!  (the sunken wall)

Looked at it again.  Dang!  It's nice.  Those doors rock!

Yep, Fsultana, it's the little things!

Or in this case:  "Eets they leetle theengs"!  (Trying to capture the spirirt of the building)  "I've come for your seester!"

Kudos again.  That model gave me inspiration for a similar "Sudan" style, and it really stands out among my "Not Khartoum" buildings!

You need to show us more.
