Haiti Revolution (WIP)
« on: January 22, 2010, 01:39:40 PM »
I planed this little projekt half a year ago. It took an earthquake to put me back to the idea...

In the search of obscure sites of the Napoleonic wars, I stumbled over the Haiti war of Independence. The conflict is very bloody, involves 4 major-powers (england, us, spain, france) of the area and has a lot of skirmishpotential...

I had a few zulu-sprues (wargames factory) form my Darkest-Africa-Project left over and combiened with ECW, gauls and Victrix-French I started to scratchbuild some slaverebels.
Rules will be "Songs of Drums and Shako" or Legends of the High Seas...

Fantastic! It is a setting I had thought about for Sharp Practice, but finding figures for the rebels was always a stumbling block. Your conversions look great.

A lot of the African figures from some of the pirate ranges would be quite suitable too. Also some figures from 'Darkest Afica' ranges.

Great stuff.

The Foundry Maroons from their pirate range are just the ticket for the Haitian forces. Nice and raggedy.

You'll definitely need some ad hoc rules for the European forces to take into account the difficulties of fighting in the tropics - lots of soldier dropping down dead from yellow fever.

For a history of the conflict, check out the absolutely brilliant website for The Louverture Project: http://thelouvertureproject.org/. I just pulled these pics off the site:

Two really good histories of the Haitian Revolution are The Black Jacobins by CLR James, and Avengers of the New World by Laurent Dubois.

There's also a good Osprey, British Forces in the West Indies 1793-1815 worth checking out for this period - lots on the British involvement. Sadly, there's nothing on the whole conflict though - would make a great Osprey.

Thanks for the inspiration! I guess this must be one of the few slave rebellions that made it, or was there any other?

Nice idea, and would make a nice change from the usual Napoleonic period of games.

Toussaint L'ouverture was a fascinating character and the French uniforms are some of the loveliest in the Nap Wars.

I'd love to see these figures painted and in action. A highly original and innovative idea. Very well done and I hope it all goes well!  :D

Thanks for the support and the motivating comments... :)

@pirate and african figures
I love the foundry models, but I miss the napoleonic feeling in them. They look too generic for me.
I want stolen/captured equipment, ragged unforms and of course bayonets... :)

@Gluteus Maximus
I am sorry to disapoint you, but the figures will be highly incorrect uniformswise. The uniforms are much too late. Its a projects to get rid of some spare plastic and fun. So its perhaps more pulp than napoleonic... :D
