Are the FASA models the same as the Eighties Citadel castings ? They must have cost you a pretty penny ..

I like the basing . It looks like they've just waded out of the sea . Really nice work .

Excellent.  The see devils and gels are particularly good.  The sea devils size well together.

Thank you!

Am I right in saying that in the first pic, the one at the front left as we look is a Harlequin, and the other two are FASA sculpts, or is it the other way around?

Yes-spot on.  The Harlequin on the left, the FASA are the two on the right.

Actually they are fairly inexpensive--a bargain for once!  WhoNA got a cache of them a while back.  I bought some sea devils and ice warriors, but they have 6 other sets. Love the little TARDIS shaped boxes they come in.  Looks like they have a deal right now where you can get one of each for 15!

I like how the basing turned out, too--I used some polyurethane gel to adhere some fine grit "gravel" flock, once it dried I pained it brown and dry brushed on highlights.  Then I glued some small bits of actual gravel for the rocks.

A wave of Sea Devils? Or maybe a froth of Sea Devils. They look great, in any case.

A wave--of course!  I like it.

Just a small update today-- Myrka madness! Went lighter with the skin tone than it appears on screen and added a speckled underbelly.  Started initially with a darker color scheme but just it looked unfinished.  The sculpt is a little rough in places so I felt like the brighter colors and higher contrast helped  separate both the left arm which is fused to the body and the front legs which are fused together.  Anyway, I think the Myrka finishes off my Sea Devil army nicely...that is unless I suddenly need to have a wave of the armored ones.  Just finishing up a few more alien squads so should have some more substantial updates next week.

Ah! The Myrka. A fine example of Dr Who "man-in-suit" monster nonsense at it's dreadful best. Must have been designed by a pantomime horse maker  lol

Despite the extreme dodginess of the original, you've done a great job with this.

Lovely!  8)

You really do need lots of armoured Sea Devils, though  ;)

Didn't know there were two types of Sea Devils sculpts. :o

Citadel did 2, the ones with the holsters, BTD did 4 (2 of which were armoured.

True enough, but as far as I know it's the only one available and I do like carrma's painting style  :)

Indeed.  The guys inside it were the same people who played the pantomime horse in Rentaghost.
Back from the dead, almost.

Yeah, I've noticed a few Harlequin minis that I've started painting recently have played up the man-in-suitness (if you will allow such a word) of many of the costumes.  On one hand, I love the campiness that it gives to some of the figures, on the other hand I'm a little baffled as to why they didn't go for a more idealized version of the monster.

I did order a few of the armored devils the other day.  I don't know if I'll get a large number of them--it's a little difficult with the quantity limits set by BTD.  But a handful of them will finish off the set with a command unit.

I think I saw a pic on your blog from a while back--weren't you working on a more screen accurate version? Would love to see how he turned out if you got him finished.

Thanks again for all the words of encouragement!  Some more pics on the way :)

Today's update is an army of ice warriors.  As with the sea devils, this is a mix of Harlequin and FASA figures.  The FASA figures are smaller--more noticeably so than with the sea devils, but not too out of scale to be used.  I didn't push the highlights as far as I wanted--the low relief texture on the armor was tricky to dry bush because of the grid-like nature, any mistakes are glaringly obvious.  Ended up painting on few highlights on individual scales and calling it quits before I started pulling out hair in frustration.

I originally based them on a rocky, rust colored Martian soil and then added a dusting of snow.  I didn't like the results, it looked dirty and slushy--more nuclear winter than alien and icy.  So I decided to go with deeper snow.  Made a good discovery--I used a thin layer of Gorilla Glue to form drifts of snow.  Gorilla Glue expands as it cures--the more glue the greater the expansion.  After it set up, I painted it light blue, added some white highlights and added a couple of layers of snow flock adhering it using polyurethane.  I'll definitely use this technique again--it is a fast way to get a more organic feel to the ground.

Looks like the ice warriors picked up a pet aggedor on Peladon...

Another great army. It would be very easy for them to look monotonous, but the green has been nicely highlighted and the vivid red eyes really set them off. Even the Aggedor looks more menacing as a model.  ;)

Miniature snow is notoriously hard to get right, but you've done a good job with yours.

I really must get my Silurians done after seeing all this Classic Who inspiration  ;D

Thanks! Funny you should mention Silurians--just finished painting mine, so I should have pics later this week.  Would love to see your interpretation--get painting!  :D

lol  yes--finishing can be tough... have several scarecrows in various stages of sculpting that have sat unfinished for a year or more.  Not sure if I'll ever get them done now that there are a couple of nice versions on the market.  But have been making the most of the bad weather, painting as much as I can before it warms up here and my motivation is lost.
