Anglican Orders?
« on: February 10, 2010, 09:18:03 AM »
Are or were there, pertaining to the VBCW, any saintly orders within the Anglican church with monks and nuns in habits? I know there are but a few in the Swedish Lutheran church.

As far as I know, Nuns and Monks are purely a Catholic convention in the UK. The C of E colleges had their students in civilian dress, with robes and 'mortar boards' as appropriate and the 'dog collar' for those already ordained.

Following in the Church of England's grand tradition of wanting to be both Protestant and Catholic at the same time, and despite Henry VIII knocking all the monasteries down, there are indeed Anglican orders (girls, boys and mixed (aye, aye!  ;))). Definitely Benedictines, probably others too.

You don't really ever see or hear about them though. But then again I suppose you wouldn't, if they've withdrawn from the world like monks are supposed to.

That was *exactly* why I had a hunch there might be Anglican orders. Thanks.

Yes,nuns and brothers, however they went by the wayside post WW2 as the the Anglican Church became more modern. Dont' forget that within the Anglican's themselves they had High Church (bells and incense, crossing yourself) to Low Church, more like Methodists,Baptists etcetera. As for the expression 'saintly orders' it is should be expressed as 'religous orders',and the religous orders may or may not take vows (in general secular priests do not and are therefore not part of a religous order).

According to that website I linked to Greywolf, they seem to still be going strong. Some of them still wear habits if that page is correct.

And just to finally confuse things; It may happen that an Anglican Priest be a member of a fraternity, whilst a brother be of the same fraternity. The Priest would not have vows(unless he were a member where that was part of the rule),the brother would always take vows, usually the most important being the vow of obediance.
And finally........the dog collar should really be termed a  'Roman collar'.

Only by Anglicans.
Anglicans - the protestants who didn't protest enough, eh Greywolf?
It requires less mental effort to condemn than to think - Emma Goldman
