Sisal transport
« on: May 13, 2007, 09:14:14 PM »
today found in my new colonial book (s. the thread http://forum.backofbeyond.de/viewtopic.php?t=1646) that photo. Sisal transport in the German East Africa. Any ideas about getting the vehicle (a sort of tractor) in 28mm, maybe a similiar one to convert? I remember, Dallimore has painted some similar victorian vehicles but no idea what are they?

You might use this steam engine for starters. I have some wheels similar to the one on the picture as well, no photo though. Indeed I have planned to release a similar vehicle in the near future, using the quoted parts  :)

Edit: Dallimore's tractor looks pretty much scratchbuilt. I am quite sure I can identify several GW parts, like the wheels, and I think the engine is from the WHF steam tank.

Mimi and Toutou were transported overland with these sort of Traction Engines, too. I've wanted one for some time. Had a TMP topic about it years ago, but forgot all about it, and it had slipped my mind until now.

I think the toy ones are probably our best bet at the moment.

(Incidentally, when I was young I went to numerous "steam fairs" in the UK where you would see dozens of these beasts on display and in action. There are still hundreds of the things over here that enthusiasts keep well-maintained. They would have been seen in rural Britain everywhere as they were used to power farm machinery until well after WWII, when such things as combined harvesters started to become commonplace.)

thanks for your advices, lads! the Pardulon engine is a nice one, need it in any case. Not sure about the Diecast vehicle, looks a bit too "toyish".

Does anyone know who makes that one?

That looks like a kitbashed monstrosity... I recommend wheels from a GW Artillery Wheel Sprue, the boiler Assembly is from a Stevenson "Rocket" model (a kit of which, in 1:26th scale, is now available from Minicraft in Germany), some ork bits and odds and ends...

Matchbox did a number of locomobiles in their "Models of Yesteryear" range, but unfortunately, most were in rather small scale (due to the size of the originals), I recall 1:64th, and most were of the "showman´s engine" variety, ie vehicles used to pull fairground wagons and provide power while stationary.

There were some resin ones available a couple of years ago from the people who do flocked terrain boards, can't remember their name unfortunately, but they also did a trailer for it, some boats, steam powered aircraft, and some resin buildings.
You occasionally find them on ebay as "PMC Games" but I haven't seen any recently.

Have a look at Ironclad Miniatures:

http://www.ironcladminiatures.co.uk/21721.html

I particularly like this model (I've just assembled the one I bought at Salute). I'm intending to drill out some location holes on the roof so I can have the option of replacing the turret with a large hatch that will key into the holes. That way I can use it as an armoured artillery tractor for my VSF forces.

According to the Dallimore Book, page 154 the main component is/was a Stevenson's Rocket (00 Scale Model) which isn't available anymore today. Bits and pieces from (quote)Wheels and hatches from russian tanks and spare parts from a fantasy vehicle. The turret was scratch-built...(end quote).

The picture you've shown is displayed on the next page.

Edit: Just read Chris' Answer. Sorry, I didn't know the part about Minicraft. So perhaps there is still a possibility to get one. :)

Please note that I don´t know if it is the Minicraft Rocket! :?:

It´s just an amazing coincidence - last tuesday, I went to my FLMS to buy a nice Crossley truck, and saw the Minicraft kit. SO you MIGHT adapt the kit for use as a steam tank, but it shouldn´t be that difficult to actually scratch a boiler group. Or use the one I sculpted for Pardulon. */plug*

I've bought those from PMC on Ebay just a couple of months ago, but PMC has not been offering models for sale recently.  However, another UK seller by the name of "sellthatstuffboy" offers PMC (pre)painted buildings.  Perhaps he can help out.

I hadn't registered the Stevenson's Rocket pieces, but I picked up some assorted (mostly 1/32 vintage cars) cheap kits from Dapol, including a Rocket, got them from their factory shop after a quick "off chance" visit whilst touring through North Wales, so Rockets might still be available.

There seems to be some confusion about the mentioned components, so here are my infos:

Dallimore used the main parts of the Airfix Rocket HO/00 1:76 scale kit, no longer available (from Airfix ...).  :( The good news are, the same kit from the same moulds is now marketed by Dapol and still available for a very reasonable price tag:

http://www.duncansmodeltrains.co.uk/product.asp?P_ID=1972&numLanguageID=1

 :)

You should even get one from one of my favourite supplier of arcane materials, Godfather's models and supply:

http://www.gmens.nl/

Just ask them, Alex. They are very nice people. :)

The Minicraft kit is 1:26th scale and way too large for 28mm, but can be bought here:

http://www.moduni.de/product_info.php/products_id/6141101

In case you`ll ever think about building some monstrous and really infernal victorian steam fighting machinery, then you should buy the Minicraft kit anyway, as I did. And order the other one on top:

http://www.moduni.de/product_info.php/products_id/6141102?osCsid=d8c3b71eab11c0ef3dd9e31a3d19f4aa

You'll need the parts.

God wants it!

Might be worth checking out model railway suppliers.  You can buy "O" Scale (1/43) vehicles including traction engines.  See bottom of this webpage for examples:

http://www.scalelink.co.uk/acatalog/Duncan_Models__O__scale___________RETAIL_ONLY_.html

They even do an 8 in Howitzer if you want to use the engine to tow it (if memory serves Britain did so during the Boer Wars)
They were all drawn to the Keep; the soldiers who brought death; the father and daughter fighting for life; the people who have always feared it; and the one man who knows its secret....
