Ral Partha Colonials
« on: 22 March 2010, 02:06:43 PM »
I stumbled upon this website the other day;
http://www.greatendeavours.co.uk/colonials/index.php

Turns out that they sell the old Ral Partha Colonial range. I like the prices! Does anybody know how well the minis fit in with more modern lines? Scale wise?

Whilst the old Ral Partha colonials are lovely little figures, they are now tiny by comparison with modern ranges. Sorry.
They will not force us,
They will stop degrading us,
They will not control us,
We will be victorious!!

How about with the Space 1889 minis sold by RAFM? They are on the smaller side too.

Not as small as Partha.  I mix RAFM, Castaway & Foundry, and now Perry.  The Perry's are a bit larger, but not enough to bother me.  The only Partha's I use are vehicle crews where the smaller size makes them easier to fit into tight spaces.

Sorry, they are short and "thin."  I have mixed them with the old Mini-Fig that were short and "fat" and they made an interesting mix.  They are good looking but are Liliputian compared to the 28mm figures of today.

Can someon etell me what exactly size are Ral Partha Colonials minis to the level of the eye? I mean what does mean "smaller compared to modern 28mm lines?"

Can't find my unpainted Brits (they're put away somewhere safe::) ) but the few Zulus I've got painted up are only about 22mm from top of base to eye.  They are tiny, compared to today's standards.

Here are a Recreational Conflict 1898 USMC 28mm, Mini-Fig Indian Mutiny 25mm, Ral Rartha Gurka Colonial 25mm?, Great War 1914 French 28mm.  Sorry that they are out of focus (it was late after a long day at work) but I think you can see how small and thin the Ral Partha really are.

Here we have the Mini-fig, Great War, Ral Partha, Recreational Conflict.

The old Ral Partha colonials are small even for 25mm. They are not even close to fitting in with 28mm. I think they are only 25mm to the top of the head & thin compared to other lines.

I traded mine off a while ago, so no comparison photos, but the Ral Partha colonials (despite being magnificent sculpts, many by the great Tom Meier) are weensy. Closer to a true 20mm-22mm scale than even a 25mm scale (they look small even next to 25mm figures of the same period). Completely incompatable with even the smallest 25mm-28mm lines of today.

I agree, I have some of the old Ral Partha figs from the '70s-'80s, and a single Tom Meier elf cavalryman sold by Citadel, and they were small even then, before scale creep made 25mm figs into 28mm that were mostly 30mm+ anyway.

They really are tiny compared to pretty much anything around now.

The scant handful of these fellows I have (gift from a friend years ago) seem to be "True 25s", IE 25mm to the top of their head. That puts them in the way of being 1:70 to 1:72 scale, as opposed to the 1:53 to 1:58 scale of modern "Heroic 28mm" figures. Add the realistic proportioning, and they look like school children next to many other ranges of figures.
from Mr.Vampire: "It's the paintjob that makes the miniature fight harder not the size."

Has anyone got a sample they'd be prepared to send me? Naturally I'll cross your palm with silver. I might have a use for these.
Don't!
