Super System Demo Games Oz
« on: March 25, 2010, 03:12:58 AM »
In a bit more than a week I'll be running a Demo of Super System at Conquest, a Melbourne games convention. (www.conquest.asn.au) This is the first of three such events I'll be running throughout the year and I thought I'd do a diary of them here.

Firstly, yes Fourcolourfigs, I didn't ask any permission to do these games, but I'm not turning a profit from them and I currently represent 20% of your Melbourne player base. Also I don't actually have any SSV3 figures in my collection as of yet.

Since this year marks my return to full-time tertiary study; I don't have as much time as I would like to get things ready for wargames. As such I can only take what I have finished or almost finished to Conquest.
Finished Supers:
Grey Hulk
Ultimate Giant Man
Clayface
Whirlwind
Susan Storm/Richards
Ultimate Electro
Ultimate Iron Man
Scorpion
Kraven the Hunter
Spiderman (Peter Parker)
Sandman
Trapster/Paste Pot Pete
Radioactive Man (Marvel Version)
Ultimate Hawkeye
Daredevil

I have most of these statted up, but unfortunately they're not a highly recognisable group and my aim is to attract attention from wargamers. To that end, I'm frantically painting some iconic heroes and villains to temp people over to my table. I hope to have finished:
Black Cat
Mr Freeze (needs highlights)
Ben Grimm (basing)
Man Thing (basing)
Judge Dredd
Ultimate Juggernaut (touch ups)
Ghost Rider (touch ups)
Frank Castle (touch ups)
Two Face (highlights)
Doom
Hellboy (highlights)
Ultimate Captain America (touch ups)
Quicksilver (washes)
Johnny Storm (basing)
Iron Man New Avengers Armour (highlights)
Magneto (washes)
Batman (touch ups)
Black Panther (touch ups)
Red Skull

More updates later, I have several essays I should be doing.  ::)

Um, I don't understand.   :?  You need permission to put on a game with your own miniatures, rules copy, and terrain?   ???  Or, more likely, is this an inside joke between old friends?

I'm so confused.    lol Yes, more than what passes for normal.   o_o

i would think Scott would be more than happy people are running demos and participation of Supersystem games at any cons.

It can only increase the number of players and hopefully bring in more customers for the rules and minis,

Well done on putting all the work in and i hope you have a great Con,

Truly, you do not need my permission to run SuperSystem games! But you do have my encouragement and support!

Thanks for doing this!

I didn't really think I did, but I've had some GW people harangue me for running Necromunda "Without Permission" before, so I like to err on the side of caution.  :?

Which is yet another reason why I use the Supersystem, and Chaos in Cairo for my gaming demo needs.   ;)

Taking a break from the painting table, so I thought I'd throw in a little update.

I'v just finished off (barring a coat of varnish) Batman, Two Face, Hellboy, Juggernaut, Iron Man and Black Panther. I may finish off some more later, but I'm taking a break for at least as long as it takes for me to finish a beer.  ;)

The first demo of 2010 is done and dusted and sadly it seems like a wasted exercise. There were a couple of expressions of interest, but no one really wanted to learn about the game. The longest conversation I had all day (with someone I didn't previously know) was with a guy that kept telling me about his games of Heroclix; he seemed incapable of understanding me when I said I hadn't played Heroclix since 2004 and had no real interest in it beyond a source of more figures for Super System.

That said, the con wasn't a total waste, I picked up the BPRD Boxed Set and a few Marvel and DC boosters, getting a few nice figs that have gone on the pile to be rebased and repainted. New pile additions (aside from Hellboy and crew) include; Blazing Skull, Ringmaster, Iron Man (helmet off), Namorita, The Punisher with chaingun, Ultimate Namor, Ronin, Adam Warlock, Emperor Joker and Energiser and Zero Gee from Power Pack. My friends were giving me funny looks when I practically danced with the excitement of having two members of Power Pack.

With a bit of luck I'll have some photos of the event up soon.

Man, what a bummer! I am sorry it did not work out as well as you'd planned. Thanks, again for doing it!

I would like to reward your diligence in some way, so send me a PM when you get a chance!

Heroclix guys just don't want to switch or try.  I've tried.  They are a differnet type of miniature collector/gamer.

About a week out from Little Wars (http://www.littlewars.net.au/) and I'm just finishing up the last few pieces. Only two more figures (Blob and Man-Bat) to finish up and a couple of terrain pieces that need a bit more painting.

I've constructed a series of city rooftops for the heroes to leap and bound across that they beat each other down in classic Silver-Age style.

As well as the rooftops, I've made some water tanks, cords of wood and some loose girders for use in the game.

I'm interested in seeing these. I've got two more guys to paint up before I start tackling some functional terrain. A series of rooftops have been what I've had in mind for a while now. I was thinking about just altering a few WorldWorks buildings for the time being.

My rooftops are mostly made from some spare cardboard, cork tiles and boxes I already had. This means that a few of them have similar dimensions, but the table plays well and can be transported in two crates, so I'm happy with the results.

Well, Little Wars was yesterday, and I'd have to say it went pretty well.

Once again, I had the problem of having to babysit kids all day but some good did come of it. I just bugs the hell out of me when someone drops their kid off at a game so that they can go look at something else, a couple of people that were seriously interested didn't get a go because of it. But hey, that's the risk when running anything that's not Fields of Glory I guess.

Anyhow, a dad and his two kids played and they were pretty good, the dad hunted down SSV3 on his I phone then and there and started asking advice on statting up the Heroclix he already had at home.

The second and mercifully final game of the day involved a group of kids under 15 and one of their's little sister watching. It was excruciating. I'd hand one of them five dice and tell them to roll five dice and they'd sit there for a minute and count them.

After lunch I didn't have a game, so I got to browse the other tables, buy some nice stuff and drink plenty of German beer, so not a wasted day by any measure.

Some Little Wars pics up on the NWA website.

http://www.nwa.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=294:littlewars2010&catid=45:past-events-general&Itemid=215

A couple of nice shots of my Rooftop Table and some of my clix repaints. I'm the fetching fellow in the black shirt being patient with children.

In a few weeks I'll be doing my last demo game of the year at the NWA Open Day. I've made a ruined city over which the BPRD and Rasputin (with Nazi backup) will battle it out. I've still got a bit to paint, but the end is in sight.
