Like Hammers, I like my Weird World War II… light… (if I understand his post correctly)

I mean still "plausible" in some ways but with some occult aspects added. I also like secret weapons (weapons of secret contraption) but mainly as scenic elements and/or games objectives. I could add some zombies (or ghosts) in a game but only for the "bad" side… I really don’t like werewolf, patch-up super soldiers (like Frankenstein’s monsters) or walkers…

I like that all the basic troops have historically accurate personal weapons (rifles, SMG, HMG, grenades, etc.) The heroes (from either side) could have special attributes and/or be protected by some kind of magic elements (then again only something "basic").

I like extreme environments (Artic, Antarctic, jungles), hidden bases, dark castles kind of settings…

Basically so, I like my WWWII to be like the opening sequence of Hellboy (the first movie). Special services units with 1 or 2 occult specialists added… Ordinary men facing extraordinary situations

That's roughly what I am talking about. I am not keen on the mastodon elements pandemic zombie outbreaks, armadas of forts on wheels and all out nuclear war. There may well be a *threat* of it in the game, which is the objective to surpress. The Hellboy stories work like this, so do many films. BPRD has taken another route, and in that universe Munich and Baltimore are now annihilated by frogmen and troglodytes. Not to keen on that turn of events.

I am starting to look at WW2 and WWW2 gaming with more interest.

I have got to say that I love mechs and mecha, so the crazier and bigger the vehicles the better.

I do also like a a dose of realism so what if scenarios and builds are okay too, using proposed and weapons in development at the time.

I like it heavy on the Weird Science and a light Occult touch -- more Cthulhean Delta Green espionage than hordes of zombies staggering about.
Play the game, not the players!

When I started, many years ago, not many figures were available (mostly Brigade Games and Pulp/Copplestone and a few odd ones here and there, as well as some conversions), so the core of my weird war figures were historical minis. As more figures came out, I got more so that now I have enough to cover all the possible angles. Which doesn't mean I couldn't also play games where there is only a small weird element involved if I wanted. Sometimes you can do "less is more" by owning more and using less of it.  ;)

I was first interested by Project X which was very much the "Sceret War" type of twist, but SOTR does the trick for me now.

We have largely played it with a light touch - mainly taking (possible) historical situations and applying a twist of weird stuff to change the tactical challenge - for example we had a german raid on a british scientific "think tank" which included a Vampire as the leader of the german raiders, and a toned down version of "Ash" (the special character in SOTR) amongst the defenders - everything else was "normal"

The SOTR rules work very well for this - you could use them for an entirely historical scenario if you would like but you can throw in one or two weird units as well (and. of course, much more if you wish)

We are now looking at the breakout from Normandy in July 1944 and wondering what would have happened if the germans had had mechs to stride over the hedgerows...

My first step into WWW2 was also through Project X, and thats what I'm still interested in.

Some secret operations, covered "Feldversuche" of the new "Creations" and cleaning up the mess if something is going wrong, so the public will not know about it.

A little occult, a little genetics and a little wierd science, but not to much.

And no Mechas!!!

Although I have some, just because they look great lol

I hear you about the Mechas.....I don't like them in my 'setting' but I sure like the way they look, and I'm not opposed to owning a few, just for 'posterity sake'.... lol

Look to Wolfenstein 3D and The Spear of Destiny. Though more 'zombie' zombies instead of those with clock-work, chest-mounted shotgun-type-thingies. Things like the Nazi Zombies game in Call of Duty 5: World at War are also a favorite. And I like a lot of those crazy ideas both sides had during the war, such as prototype weaponry, vehicles and infantry. Not so much the whole tesla coils ON EVERYTHING, approach, nor the mecha. Though I will mention that I do like the very stylized mechs, I just don't think they really have the right place in what I like to think of as WWWII.
Everything is better with lizardmen.

Perhaps unsurprisingly we here at Scarab like the secret war option, and thats how Projekt X "reborn" is being built.
The war will still end in 1945.
But, and this is a huge wonderful "but" with all the trickery and research the Nazis may, or may not have been up to, you can just about do anything in your games.

We will have a small PX game at Salute showing an example of just that  :D

And yes, I do want a mech or two of some type as well...
Kind regards

I usually say that on 1/1/45 the world has experienced something called the Turning and that the world has now turned into to shit.  The dead have arisen and creatures of myth, folklore and superstition have now taken route in the places that created them.  Super-tech is slowly appearing in limited numbers and supers as becoming more and more apparent.  The world has decayed into a post apocalyptic nightmare as humanity is no longer on top of the food chain and with the worlds military might in the field, the troops of all nations now find themselves surrounded by new horrors and with the burning desire to just return home to see if their loved ones have not been devoured by the new nightmare that has been trust upon all the world.  This allows you to pretty much play whatever you want without any kind of strict background.  I can use just about any miniature with just a little imagination.  Classic Slaneesh Demonetts are Elder creatures from the deep in search for mates and those Tau Vehicles from the vanguard from the forces of Atlantis.  Witches, werewolves, ghouls, superheroes, crazed half staved hillbillies, marauders of both Axis and Allied units and even the fallen and righteous of God's messengers have found a place on my WWWII battlefield.  So if I like it I can make it work in my WWWII with just a little imagination and a whole lot of sick.

Just keep it Weird,
Brian

I must admit I can't believe how popular this genre of gaming has become I started years ago with the 40mm graven range which was a really fantastic range, nothing was really avaliable in 28mm now everyone is on the bandwagon!!! I prefer the skimish style zombie with a touch of super science myself, having recently sold the majority of my www2 collection I'm left with yanks and some german zombies which i will add to, I like the idea of an American patrol stuck behind enemy lines overwhelmed by zombies, I must admit some of the figures coming out recently have been crap and maybe the genre has reached it's peak? Westwind for example with the spider tank is just ridiculous! I wish graven had pushed their range more because in my opinion it was the best out there. :)

That sounds about right to me, but absolutely NO mechas- they're just plain ridiculous and impractical.
