The Forty Thousand Horsemen has Chips Rafferty. That should be recommendation enough. The director was the nephew of Harry Chauvel which makes for an interesting link.

The Lighthorsemen has Gary Sweet and Serge Lazareff which should be sufficient warning (albeit they are in minor roles).  Twenty plus years since I saw it but my memory is that it was the sort of film that could do with walking daily, regular brushing of its coat and a nice juicy bone for its teeth. Nowhere near as good as that very clever comedy, Galipolli.

Ok. Cool. Good WWI films are a bit thin on the ground so it is good to see that I have missed one. It seems like it is only available as imports on Amazon and that at prizes I do not care to pay. Maybe I shall ask Helen to get it for me.

Hi Peder,

If you need a copy just shout!

Best wishes,

eerrrruugh...Gary Sweet.

Forty Thousand Horsemen hasn't aged well either (apologies to Carlos and Helen). I was trying to draw a discreet veil over it. Although Chips was a god.

Go to one of the sources if you're serious. Ion Idriess' The Desert Column. It's still a great read. I have a few editions of it and it's easy to find in Australia (even without this interwebby thing).

Billy Martin, my wife's instructor, met T E Lawrence while he was there. He gave her an interesting, if pithy and unflattering, character assessment.

YIJ has aged a bit but still worth watching. Shaun Pannicky Flannel (or what ever his name is) is enjoyable as are the stories (especially the one with the old lunatics in Africa taking out a railway gun  ;D )

I've only got season two at the moment as it is the war years one, I will get round to getting the others because it's perfect Saturday afternoon watching.

I quite liked 'The Light Horsemen' as a film becuase you can put it on when painting or some such and only really have to stop and watch at the end  ;)

cheers

Light Horsemen was a mini series that was cut down to be a film, a kind of Middle East ANZACS.

Available on dvd from Australian suppliers, personally I like it but I'm easy to please :)

Everyone should own ANZACS btw, even if it is off topic.

I'd love a copy but cant seem to get hold of a copy over here. Light Horseman, good cavalry charge but thats it really for me.
