Field musicians in GASLIGHT. Any possibilities?
« on: April 07, 2010, 03:14:26 AM »
As I told in my previous Flag topic I've devided to change 1 rifleman in my GASLIGHT unit to standart beare, but he will behave as a rifleman (As some of you do). One last question.
Does anyone have any idea of how use drummer and bugler figures? I mean I have 1 infantry buggler for Prussians and 1 drummer for Russians but I dont really want to put musicans in infantry unit... But I love the figures. Maybe someone have any idea of using them? Is it possible to use them as non combat units without any special abilities and use them only for standing near army general? For example bugler stands near general and helps him to command the trops (with his bugle). And field musicians just playing music to make death more pleasant for troops :) ?

I love music!

I wish there was a Prussian marching band. I'd grant them "fear causing" due to large horns.

There's no reason why you cant use them as eye candy on the board but you may as well arm them and put them to use. You can always have them as part of your  leaders staff or body guard and perhaps just arm them with pistols. If you follow that idea and they form a unit of less than ten men remember you'll have to modify your morale throws to reflect this (just like artillery crews etc.)
Don't!

Eye candy would be fine with me. A guy I know worked for absolutely ages on a 20 man 'Marching Band' for his 40k Praetorian Imperial Guard army. It was the Generals "Trademark Item".
So many projects..... so little time.......

Unlikely, he's an ex-tanker so tech isn't really his forte :D
I'll ask if he's still got it when I next bump into him.

I do not know if any Prussian marching band exists in 28mm (i know one from Preiser but I think it was 1:87 I am not sure if there is also in 1:72, both, too small !) but Tradition of London has a british marching band and they wear spiked helmets!

if the link does not work, look at 30mm Tradition figures.
I think that if you dont care about uniform exact, a different paintjob might make them look like Prussian!

IMHO, the British HS helmet, although spiked, looks nothing like a Pickelhaube.  Perhaps in 6mm, but in 28mm, no way!

You could chop the helmets off and model feldmutz(en - correct plural?) made out of greenstuff in their place. Not quite so showy as the good old pickelhaube, but perfectly reasonable for bandsmen to wear.

My Gaslight Highlander unit has a bag piper. He is a character rather than an extra so he gets a save roll. He is just armed with a pistol and sabre. Nice eye candy for the unit. My standard bearers are the same , characters instead of extras.

Cheers
Fuzzy.
Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly
down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red
Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture,
torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals.

Causes minus one to morale tests for anyone in earshot and minus two to the enemy?  lol

Only joking - I love the skirl of the pipes!

I just use the piper as a normal figure in my blackwatch, no special rules or anything. Just there for eye candy and to make up numbers. It saved me buying a whole other packet of riflemen when I was only short of a single figure to make up the ten man squad I needed.
Mine were Perry miniatures that come in packets of six. 1 x rifleman packet and 1 x command squad packet gave me a 10 man squad with a a leader (and piper) included and two spares. One spare is a the main character figure for my army. The other spare is the drummer, not sure what to do with him.
