Galacteer Personalities
« on: 27 April 2010, 05:47:58 PM »
Here are some individual pictures of my Galacteer figures from LPL round 9:

Entry Photo:

Ace McGuire:

Jane Hunter:

Comet:

Dr. Zahn:

One does wish that the various pulp spaceman lines included more Dr. Hans Zarkov types like Dr, Zahn...

Rocky Rizzo:

As I mentioned in the LPL entry thread, there really isn't enough to distinguish Rocky Rizzo from a standard Galacteer Trooper, visually (the pointing Galacteer Sgt. looks more like a character figure than he does...).

The Galacteers are great figures, but their romper suits are always an issue. They look like pressure/environment suits and they're very smooth and featureless and they lack insignia (or good places to put freehand insignia). I'm looking forward to the promised forthcoming line of Galacteer figures which is supposed to feature the Galacteer characters in civilian mufti.

The Galacteers always remind me of the Major Matt Mason spaceman toy (I had many of them growing up) I think it's the accordian pleats at their joints:

The color scheme for my entry was actually somewhat influenced by Major Matt Mason's alien friend/enemy Captain Lazer:

I love the metallic blue look to their space suits. It has just the right retro-SciFi look.

I assume it's a silver base with blue ink wash(es)?

Or do you have a more cunning method?  ;)

Thanks, that's exactly the look that I was going for (and the look that is practically dictated by the design of the figures, I think).

You're pretty close. The shiny metallic suits were done with Reaper Pro-paints Green Steel, highlighted up with added mixes of GW Chainmail and then Mithril Silver (over a black undercoat). This "forced" the highlights. Then I added a couple of thin coats of the GW Asurmen Blue wash, thinned with water and some Vallejo Matte finish to get a better working consistency.

Slightly more cunning than my guess. I have all those paints except the Reaper one  :(

Never mind, it will still be worth trying!

If you don't have a colored metallic paint on hand, you can make your own by using a mix of Mithril Silver and one of the older, thinner GW washes (not the modern gooey ones). It may also be not entirely necessary, as the washes of Asurmen Blue at the end cover all sins... ;)

High praise, coming from you Froggy...! ;)

I actually hate doing metallics, but I've been working on trying to improve how I handle them. (Froggy has a huge long list of things I hate painting, and it keeps getting longer all the time...!).

I used to hate the painting part of the hobby... LAF (or the laffers) has made me like it by inspiring me to use the layering technique. Now I actually enjoy sitting with one mini at a time and building up each colour from shade to hightlight. And i get much nicer minis than I did before , as I mostly used flat blocks and/or drybrushing (only shading/highlighting select parts, such as the skin)...

Of course it also helps that I've turned completely to skirmish games where I do not need more than a handful of minis for each game session  ;)

Cool miniatures with a thoroughly thought out and thoughfully executed paint scheme.  Just as I have come to expect from you Heldrak  8)

It doesnt hurt that your favoured choice of pulp sci-fi themed figures like that Galacteers and Barsoomians press all of my dork buttons either.
