The "Townsfolk" of Mauch Chunk, true 25mm figures.
« on: August 04, 2006, 04:27:49 PM »
Well, after some digging through some old boxes for additional figures for my game, I have a very good selection of characters.  I have right now a good majority of my characters ready to go (roughly 120).  But oddly enough I still need more.

After filling up the ranks for the town, I did make a terrible decision.  I wont be using any of my copplestone and some of my "pulp figures" wont work either.as they are monsters next to thses figures.  Right now I have the majority filled out with Old Grenadier, RAFM, Steve Barber and the older "Old West" foundry figure range.

I have what was servicable from Discount hobbies enroute as we speak but like i said, I still need more.  Does anyone know of any ranges that would fit in with the older "true" 25mm figures?  I want civilians with out weapons, as these are the generic townsfolk type.

Also,  I mght try running an online version of my game through the Vassal engine.  If this works out is anyone interested? the setup will be easy, its the commitment from people that mght make it hard.

My townsfolks are also mostly made up of true 25mm, current population over 200.

Hovels: Mostly nice buildings, but have some farmers and helpers
Foundries: Victoriana works well
DIXON miniatures (UK): are older 25mm also, have recently produced a nice line of Gangsters (and civilians), also the Wild West line is fairly extensive.
Rafm: Vampires le fantastique: mostly modern, but some packs can pass for earlier (the Hunter, the Cat, maybe the Manipulator)
Eureka: (Australian) have various period civilains (Scale is reasonable, I only have some cultists from them, but they fit in well with the old grenadier COC investigators)

Modern style figures in 25mm:
Cannot recommend Ground Zero Games highly enough, vast array of civilians, and other more familiar faces.

Slightly larger: 28mm some might work, not as large as Cooplestone
Bridge Games (USA) have a line of alternate world war II /Gothic horror, and Gangs of New York line, the latter will provide useful.
Chiltern: Gothic Horror line will have some useful pieces.
West Winds: Various vampire war lines have many civilian packs, Chaos in Cairo Egyptian civilians, Jekyl & Hyde's London gentlemen and Street thugs, Sleepy Hollows civilians, (Also in the modern line 2 packs of Superfigs civilians 20 figures) style is sometimes a bit too cartoonish.
Also the Berlin or Bust line has some good civilians & french resistance.
Black Tree Designs (UK) might have some useful bits in the World War II line, French resistance again.

Lastly incase you dont have them already:
EM-4 (UK) have re-released a batch of the old Metal Magic Dunwich Detectives (ummm Deep Ones) which includes two boxes (10 figures in total) of pre-painted investigators, and now around 30 unpainted Monsters, Gangsters and Police.
These are true 25mm.

Hmm seems that maybe they dont produce them anymore
However this is where I first saw them:

http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tpope/sol/rafm/vampyres.html

However I got mine from Discount Hobby and they still have them at Sentry Box in canada (Best)

(Not that I am influenced by the fact they have a Dark Young on the home page...)

Nice find on the Rafm site Prof.

Prof, as you're in the US this might be a viable option. For 'civilians', miners & the like, you might want to try looking at some of the model railroad manufacturers - S gauge is 1:64 which is pretty close to 'true' 25mm. Although it's a specialised (ie uncommon & therefore potentially expensive!) scale, most is based on American prototype & I'd guarantee that you will find some figures in 1920's style clothing since they were some of the the golden years for US railroading. Grab a copy of Model Railroader or Rail Model Craftsman & take a look at the adverts. Alternatively start here http://www.s-scaletrains.com/

Etranger,
I did find some sets of preiser unpainted civilians, so I might order one of them to give it a try.  the problem is I think most of the figures are too "modern" for what I am doing.  also the cost of some fo the figures are too much, but I am trying to find something in those lines that is suitable and cost effective.  thanks

Cy,
thanks for pointing that out.  I just got my latest delivery from Discount, so I shot Johnny an email and see what he says about them.  I looked on the sentry website and they only had the cat set left.

where did you get the name of the town Mauch Chunk from?

i'm from NE PA - Wilkes-Barre area, and have an idea it's Jim Thorpe (the town)'s original name.  i was just wondering, as Mauch Chunk is not a name one hears bandied about casually.

They Might Be Giants is now runnig through my head: well Istanbul was once Contantinople - runnig parallels to Mauch Chunk - Jim Thorpe.  but i digress...

Ralph,
I live on the fringe of Jim Thorpe, so "Mauch Chunk" is my home town.  If you look aqt my "Incorporating local history" thread, you will see the little horror game I am making based on the area.

are you a member of PAWN?  I've been trying to get up there, but my schedule always seems to conflict.
