28mm Pulp Luggage
« on: 16 June 2007, 04:40:28 AM »
These have been kicking around my paint station for a while now: 28mm scale Pulp luggage and hat-box:

What you're looking at are the masters I hope to mold and cast in one sided molds using two part resins. I want to use a handful of them for game objectives.

I wish I had access to a white metal casting service in New Zealand because I'd love to mass produce them. Although of course that would require me to re-master them entirely in green stuff as I suspect plasticard and bamboo offcuts wouldn't stand up to high temperature vulcanisation!

Comments are welcomed. I had also planned to master a 'travelling chest' type affair but haven't got around to it yet...

Very nice job. They would be a great adition to a game. after all what lady in that time would have been without a hat box?

Those are NICE! Luggage and steamer trunks are something I thought would make nice additions to the typical pulp/colonial props. Here's to hoping that someone can help you out casting wise. Did you post about it over at TMP?

Very neat!

Yeah, resin and plasticard don't hold up well for heat and preassure vulcanisation. Yet you often see platicard used for swords and similar things on the greens at Reaper and others. I suspect they use gentler cold vulcanization rubbers or silicon and cast up new masters in low temp melting point alloys (i.e. plenty of lead and bismut in it)

Love that suitcase and hat box   I think clutter and bits and pieces really make games come alive. they look great on the table next to buildings, vehicles etc.

Lovely stuff, I :D  feel inspired to try and reproduce these, they are great encounter markers. Thanks for showing them.

Tabletop, I think you could produce these in resin and save yourself the headache and cost associated with metals. Resin casting is so DIY nowadays you could do it yourself.

Really nice!  Why can't you mass produce them in resin though?  Cast up a few masters, put about twenty of these in a single flat mold, pour the resin with only a thin wafer between the luggage items, and pick the ones that came out good.

I can certainly resin cast them you're correct (I already resin cast a lot of 15mm terrain). The real problem is that locally (in New Zealand) resin is quite expensive, particularly compared to metals.

Eg. $40nz for a KG of white metal vs $30nz for a half litre of two part resin.

Plus metals have the distinct advantage in that you can re-use the miscasts as raw materials. So I might just give them a try. Actually I might just resin cast AND metal cast these pieces out of curiosity...

Hi, Very nice! Providing the case is not hollow inside it could be cast in metal in a silicone mouls as it is. The hat box would need to have the top take off of the bamboo and put onto a plastic tube (fully filled) or a metal rod then it would be fine (the greenstuff should come off of the bamboo with relatively little damage depending on how thick it is). We could put them in a mould for you if you like if you don't make silicone moulds or have access to someone who does, we are in the uk but these would be very light to post. We already make luggage: http://www.blackcatbases.com/product.asp?strPageHistory=category&numSearchStartRecord=0&strParents=103&CAT_ID=103&P_ID=447&btnProduct=More+Details but it would be nice to see these in production they are nice:)

In the end I did cast the luggage in resin and here's the first casts. I've darkened the photo a little to try and show up the detail on the pieces. There are some air bubbles here and there as you can see but they'll be patched with a little green stuff prior to painting.

I also added a carpet bag, which also looks like a doctor's bag so it could be used either way depending on the paint job. Oh, and a little throw away 'brown paper package tied up with string' which is resting on top of the hat box.

Now I'm casting and painting a bunch of them!

They look great.  And the cool thing is you could throw some into a regular envelope for delivery almost anywehere in the world for the cost of mailing a letter.  Wanna mail a set to the USA?
