Help me identify a few old minis
« on: 23 May 2010, 02:37:43 PM »
I've been taking inventory of sorts, and unearthed these... anyone know what they are?

The two guys to the right have no markings on their bases. The left guy reads GW 84 (or 1984, don't have it in front of me) and what seems to be "UGBASH". Googling a little, I see he's mentioned as a White Dwarf personality in WD#50 from... 1984. =) Haven't been able to find him on SOL or CCM-wiki. Anyone got pics/info?

Miniatures sculpting has, for the most part, come a long way since then.

True that... I do like the bug-eyed freak to the right though. If only I know what he was, I could paint him the appropriate colours. =)

If you're still looking for info on Ugbash, his stats for Runequest (IInd Edition I think) and AD&D were in White Dwarf 50, with a little bit of background info for use as an NPC. He's a sort of Chaos Warrior-cum-slaver, who in the old backstory to White Dwarf managed the Mail Order Department (I think).

I want to say that the one that isn't Ugbash and isn't the Bugbear is a Hobgoblin, but I don't know why I think that.

The page Svenn posted with the Bugbear also has a Chaos Warrior called Vandamar. I happen to know that was the name of the first D&D character Manic_Miner rolled up, I guess shortly after he bought the boxed set (about 1983 would be right, MM?)

Yep, that's him - it's a bug bear... no wonder he's bug-eyed! =) Thanks guys!

I think I'll paint it up as some sort of troll half breed, depending on how it cleans up. It's a pretty neat model in hand, really. Ugly bastard, but he's got potential.

Thanks for the extra fluff on Ugbash, Red Orc!

The Bugbear miniature would make a great troll halfbreed.

I cant remember seeing the one in the middle. He might not be a citadel miniature.

I still have a few of the white dwarf box set miniatures.

@Red Orc you have a great memory for all things old.Still never really got into RPG's.My brother play's/played quite a few of them though.

I just love the little miniatures.

Wait until you see what I have to release in June  :D.

The bugbear's name by the way is Gobslob. I remember him fondly, as one of my cousins used the miniature for his D&D character in the early 80s. Don't ask me, why we never had any objections to the critter in our group...  :D

The first one can be found here,in the WHITE DWARFS PERSONALITIES BOX SET:

http://www.solegends.com/citboxes/c2wdperson.htm

The second one i don´t think it is a citadel mini.

Are you sure you don't have any lead rot there phreedh? I know some of the alloys used with old castings are quite dark but the first and last mini there look suspicious.  At the very least make sure your undercoat is complete and covers the bottom of  the base as well. If there is any graininess to the mini at all just get rid.

Quite possible. =) I got these recently in job lots. Correct me if I'm wrong, but lead rot doesn't spread like a virus, ravaging your entire collection - it just affects all susceptible models under certain storage conditions?

The guy to the right is pretty grainy, hence my "will see how it cleans up". The one on the left does not look affected, just dark but unblemished surface. There's no dusty residue to any of them...
