WW1 reference material
« on: May 23, 2010, 09:17:20 PM »
Mother in law gave me this today...

Infact she gave me all 3 volumes... 1900 pages of photos and drawings from, the start of hostilities to the end, covering all nations and fronts, incl land sea and air...

A couple of shots of the inside of volume 1 taken at random.

7,000 illustrations and drawings in total across the three titles.

That's my kinda shit! I have two similar publications, put together from contemporary newspaper and magazine articles and illustrations. Mine are a bit earlier though, one's from the Russo Japanese war, the other from the Franco-Preussian.

Excellent stuff. I was rummaging through some used books stores this past week but, here in the US, it seems World War I gets very little coverage. Shelves and shelves on WWII and the ACW, but maybe half a shelf for WWI.

The value is all in the illustrations. The text is pretty "gung-ho" and so partisan as to be irritating nowadays.

e.g. " luckily our plucky chaps were able to gave the perfidious Huns a good pasting...."

My thoughts too. As a sculptor though its very nice to be able to see the back of uniforms etc

Am resisting the urge to do early war figures....
