Does anyone know of a mini comany which produces suitable figures for this period, complete with the specialised flak jacket/body armour, riot helmets and similar?

28mm is best for me but 20mm at a push

Hmm, MOFO (Gripping Beast and Mongrel (Newline Design) produce 1970s/1980s Brits but ahvent seen any in armour.  Sloppy Jalopy produce a Hmber Pig while Britannia have just brought out the Saracen Amroured car.

Liberation would be the only ones I know of doing Brits for Ireland perhaps and I think Stonewall miniatures have some in their modern ranges?

Combat Miniatures did them in 20mm and they were very nice figures. SLRs minimum belt equipment, berets and flack jackets. They are still in production, can't remember who owns the line.  They also produced generic terrorists in balaclava. JB miniatures produce excellent and cheap Saracens and somewhere I have a decent resin Humber Pig. Look at the Scenix range of prepainted brick terrace houses, pubs shops etc and you have most of what you need. Must say I don't think there'sa great deal of gaming potential in the Troubles.

Ah cheers, I had lost track of what they were now labelled as. Some nice useful ranges there too Falklands, the Grenada Farce, Lebanon etc.

Didn't Platoon 20 have some 20mm pieces that could be used too ?

Thanks for the advice, can see an untapped market for someone, interesting aspect of a troubled but beautiful country - plenty of specialist troops, civilians and members of the different factions.

Leaving aside the politics of it,  IMO it really doesn't have that much potential. Mostly murderous little bastards shooting off duty police, civilians, rival murder gangs and the occasional soldier or setting off car bombs.  Not too many situations I'd want to game. The flip side are the limited number of actions where the SAS bounce a few provos, like the ambush at Loughall police station, which tend to be a bit one sided. Still I suppose people game Afghanistan and Iraq.

I'll agree that largely the gaming potential is very limited, but during 1970-72 there were a number of low level military actions. These consisted of firefights in the no-go areas of Belfast, along with conventional attacks on rural outposts. Obviously there were also operations to stop PIRA from crossing the border and actions around that. The conventional phase came to an end after Operation Motorman in 1972, which incidentally saw the only use of Tanks in NI (Centurion AVREs were used to remove barricades etc with the howitzer in the travel position and covered up). PIRA had also planned a 'Tet Offensive' around this time too, but this was aborted.

I'd have to admit I personally find the thought of gaming this distasteful, however I am biased by virtue of nationality and proximity.

I deleted my original post on this, this is a gaming group not a political forum, but would like to offer the following link:

I definately echo the sentiments that this really is a conflict best left off the gaming table.

Which I also find distasteful and somewhat ghoulish, I have a picture in my head of folks sat watching the news for scenario ideas for their next game.  :?

Roll a dice to see if your bomb if the pub explodes, and then cross check a table to see how many civilians are killed.

No thanks :-[

Damn right! I served 4 years there in the mid-eighties and had to (literally) pick up the pieces from the Droppin Well pub bombing. If your thing is replicating the mindless slaughter of innocent victims, then go ahead.

Personally I'd rather take up netball than game in 20thC Ulster.
