ACW Union Troops
« on: July 11, 2010, 01:54:11 AM »
22nd New York Volunteer Infantry

As the first rays of the sun began to cast a light on the farmland around the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862, the 22nd NY Volunteer Infantry marched out of the North Woods and headed into a cornfield that would become one of several "Hells on Earth" for many a young men from the North and South that day.

When someone mentions the Iron Brigade of the Union Army, the picture of Wisconsin and Indiana boys wearing the black Hardee hats at Gettysburg is typically what comes to mind.  It actually turns out that there were two Union brigades that earned the title of the Iron Brigade during the American Civil War.  The Eastern Iron Brigade (because they were all East Coast units) consisted of the 22nd NY, 24 NY, 30th NY, 84th NY (aka 14th Brooklyn) and 2nd US Sharpshooters and the Western Iron Brigade consisted of the 19th IN, 6th WI and 7th WI in September of 1862.  Both units took the field, side by side at Antietam.

Anyway, my long term goal is to paint up both Iron Brigades, but for now I'm starting off with the 1st (Eastern) Iron Brigade...

This regiment is a mix of Perry's plastics and metals.  Flags are from Old Gunny's Flags.

Nice work. I didn’t know about that second "Iron Brigade"… I guess we learn something new everyday ;)

An odd choice for a Texan, but you've done a great job on them.

I assume they will be for target practice, once you've painted Hood's Brigade in the near future  ;)

Thanks guys.

lol  Well, not being a "native" Texan I'm entitled to some eccentricities.  (Tennessean by birth)

BUT, now that you mention it... Hood's Texas Brigade just happened to be involved in this particular scrap too.  So I will be painting them up as well.   ;)  I already have the flags.  Main difference being that the 18th Georgia was in the Texas Brigade in 1862, and the 3rd Arkansas took their place in the brigade after Antietam.

My apologies for assuming the wrong birthplace  :(

When I started doing figures for my Brother Against Brother armies, Hood's Texans were the first units I intended to paint, as they were my favourite CS brigade. Sadly, I got sidetracked into doing some CS cavalry as no-one else at the time had any. It's yet another unfinished project that I hope to get done in the future. The trouble is, my eyes aren't what they used to be, so the prospect of painting all those tiny "lone star" badges is daunting  ::)

I'd also like to do the Iron Brigade (especially the 6th WI) as their opponents for solo gaming, as I think the Hardy Hat and Frock Coat combo is a great image  :D

Not an odd choice for a Texan at all. Governor of Texas Sam Houston refused to swear allegiance to the Confederacy so they kicked him out of office. He was one of the greatest Texans ever, and a Union man.

Great figures!

(Obviously he wasn't born in Texas, but it might not have existed except as a Mexican province without him.)

Yeah, they've always appealed to me as well.  I think it's that "shock" troop status they earned while in the Army of Virginia.  I can't agree more on having to paint all those lone star badges though, I'm not looking forward to it either....  Be sure and show us some pictures if you ever get back to your ACW project.

They do look sharp.  :)

Very true.  Not always appreciated by his contemporaries, he is now held in very high regards in Texas history and lore.  Well, with the one's who read history that is... teenagers might not have a clue who he is unless he shows up in a video game of some sort.

Lovely minis. I am tempted from time to time to get into ACW, especially with the beautiful Perry plastics.... Maybe someday.
