Crossing the Rhine
« on: 17 July 2010, 08:37:58 PM »
Using a modified version of Pig Wars, I created a scenerio where 3 mounted German Warbands are crossing the frozen Rhine river in search of Roman loot. What they stumble across is a small caravan of baggage animals, Legionarries, and a small detachment of mounted armoured cavalry on scouting patrol. The game starts with the three Warbands crossing the Rhine.

All movement is determained by player cards for each command, numbered 1 through 3 for the Germans, and 1 through 2 for the Romans.

When crossing the frozen river a D12 is roled for each figure. For every 1 that is roled, a figure falls through the ice. This game saw two victims claimed by the river.

Roman resistance was strong, and proved too much.  Out of the three Warbands only one wisked away a prize for their efforts.

All in all it was a fun game. The Germans have a tougher time on their hands then may appear at first. Each German command starts with nine figures. As soon as the command reaches below three, that command routes off the table. Out of three commands, one routed, one captured nothing, and the other carried of two ponies ladden with supplies. Romans win from attrition, by wearing down the Germans. With the mounted Roman command not coming on the board til the third bound, it's easier said than done.

Lovely work and nice scenario. Just out of curiosity how do you roll a '1' on a D12?

These are D12:

(D12 is not 2x 6 sided dice)

Carlos - You get D4 (pyramid shaped) D8, and D3 (six sided, but only numbered 1-3) as well.

Mikey - haven't tried Pig Wars rules, are they fast and easy ?

Really like the look of this game and the scenario sounds fun too.

Beautiful miniatures - especially the mounted Roman command. Unleash hell!  :-*

Small skirmish types games are more appealing to me then larger battles.

the figures tend to become more individual and it can support a little roleplaying as well.

Great report! I've always wanted to play Pig Wars. Did you make those cards yourself? I understood Pig Wars to be a game where figures were individually based. You modified that?
