A Sci-Fi looking tank that is actually real
« on: July 28, 2010, 11:03:20 PM »
I'm floored...

It's a mine clearing vehicle.  A Mig 15 jet engine mounted on a T-55 hull, used to blast the ground in front of it with heat to clear mines.

I must possess one...Here comes the next Company B project >:D

I remember seeing something similar in a documentary about the Kuwaiti oil field fires. It was a Mig engine mounted on a tractor bed, which was being used to blow out well fires like candles. Badass.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

So who made that thing in the first place?
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

It might also help with really fast retreats.

It just goes to show that no idea, no matter how crazy, is too insane to mount on a tank. I bet anyone seeing this rumble into action would be laughing their heads off...until it removed their eyebrows at 1000 yards!

Saw a similar one, only it had a water tanker also attached.  The jet engine was used to blow a fine mist of water into the fire - the mist works well to drop the temperatures, and when it isn't hot enough to keep itself burning, it goes out.

Something on Discovery, years ago.

That'd be this beauty chromedog.

Translation: "The Hungarians replaced the turret from an old Russian tank with 2 turbines from a Mig 21. Water is injected in the exhaust, they throttle up and extinguish the fire."

CompanyB have you got any more info on the one you found? I'm somewhat of a dabbling treadhead and very curious.

Did some reverse image searching and a little digging about and found some cool stuff.

Seems CompanyB's tank is the "Gas-dynamic minesweeper "Progrev-T.""

A cool picture of the Hungarian fire fighting vehicle, T-34 with the twin Mig21 jets.

And 10 other odd tanks/vehicles:

The Finnish machine gun "tank" made me smile.

What I like about the Progrev-T and the Hungarian one is that they don't look wacky or silly like so many odd vehicles do (both successful and failed ones), they actually look bloody scary because of the utilitarian simplicity.
