Mantic Games Zombies
« on: July 31, 2010, 06:23:38 PM »
 :o

This is a release I'm really looking forward to. Good quality, affordable, plastic zombies...what's not to like.

Also I feel, kinda shown by the picture above, they are easily usable in any setting or timeperiod. The clothes are ragged enough to be non-period specific and if you did want to make them more grounded in a timeperiod it would only take a little sculpting and/or painting them the right way.

Mantic's blog is currently in "zombie week."

While Beasts of War have had some great wee videos talking about the models and showing off the 3ups.

The loincloths are a little, well... 'loinclothy' for modern zombies but at £25 for 50 really nice looking zombies I'll just accept that the mortuary wrappings have fallen around the waist :)
So many projects..... so little time.......

Yeah these do look nice.  :) I'll have to clip the loincloths and sculpt some pants, but that shouldn't be hard.

Anyway on a serious note, I like em and all, but they have a little look of slightly more animated dead that I would have liked, some  of the leg sculpts are very dynamic and lend themselves more to the ideal of the ghoul rather than a shabbling stumbling zombie.

Also hoped for and was hinted at more modern clothing, (still fantasy but some trousers, shorts etc...) but they all appear in rags?

I think that combining these parts with the golgo island zombies might make for decent modern zeds, finger's crossed.

They look like the background dancer in "Relax (don't do it)...

That said, I think I'll by them due to the pricing. I'm just a bit worried about the GW hands...

I think they're based more on the modern zombie films/games like Resident Evil and the new Dawn of the Dead, 28 days later etc. The zombies in those are much faster and more threatening. Personally I like them.

I don't really get a feel of them being too animated, I mean even the most sluggish of "classic" zombies gets pretty nippy when the food is within arms reach. Also to me it looks like they are putting a lot of effort in, which doesn't instantly mean speed. It does for a fit fully functioning person, but when you're missing random muscles and ligaments it's probably a bit harder.

The picture is very much of the models at a work in progress stage so they can only really get better. For me at least even the work in progress looks better than anything any other company has put out.

Onto the rags/loincloths and suitability for modern and future set games. Well it all depends how old the zombie is and what it's been up to. Even really hardwearing clothes will be shredded down to pretty much nothing rather quickly when the wearer doesn't care what it's getting caught on and is shambling through whatever is in its way.

They're more Zach-Snyderish then other Zs around (= Dawn of the dead, i.e. running instead of shambling); this is the new zombie lore. For people who's grown up watching Romero, they look more like ghouls (a la Fallout3).

It's not zed lore, more divergent parallel evolution! :D
