Best Ghouls ever?
« on: August 05, 2010, 12:36:50 PM »
Hey all!
Has anyone seen these in person?

These look quite like what I imagined Pickmans Ghouls to look.
I'm going to use them as Werewolves as well.

Imagine sending the SWAT team to clean up the cemetery!
Or a group of grave robbers runs into them! LOL
take care (astro)doug

I quite like those myself. They've been on my "list" for a while.  :?

Interesting models... I've always imagined Ghouls should look like de-evolved subhumans but in Arabic folklore they were hyena like shapeshifters.

Oddly for Wargods I think they have a 90's Workshop look to them. Decent enough models but not ghouls for me.

Here's HPL's description.......

“These figures were seldom completely human, but often approached humanity in varying degree. Most of the bodies, while roughly bipedal, had a forward slumping, and a vaguely canine cast. The texture of the majority was a kind of unpleasant rubberiness.” (“Pickman’s Model”)

“It was a colossal and nameless blasphemy with glaring red eyes, and it held in bony claws a thing that had been a man, gnawing at the head as a child nibbles at a stick of candy. Its position was a kind of crouch, and as one looked one felt that at any moment it might drop its present prey and seek a juicier morsel. But damn it all, it wasn’t even the fiendish subject that made it such an immortal fountain-head of all panic—not that, nor the dog face with its pointed ears, bloodshot eyes, flat nose, and drooling lips. It wasn’t the scaly claws nor the mould-caked body nor the half-hooved feet—none of these, though any one of them might well have driven an excitable man to madness.” (“Pickman’s Model”)

Vigil Finlay's illustration to "Pickman'S Model"

And once again a Ghoul from Wargods for comparison.....

So I'll rephrase my qustion...
Are these the best HPL Ghouls ever?
IMHO.. YES! :D

Okay...when??? SHOW US! :-*

So far I think Heresy's ghouls are the best. Paul Muller and wrinkly humans are a match made in R'lyeh! 8)

First impressions last.  If it doesn't look like Don Henderson in a nappy, it isn't a ghoul to me!

Hi Doug I know what you've saying and the resemblance of the figure to the illustration is fairly strong although I'd say there is something feline about the face on the illustration. Obviously it's very subjective. I'm not a fan of that particular style of sculpting. Personally speaking I imagine HPL ghouls to retain some type of clothing either 20s style or modern style for delta green... but this is certainly down to Chaosium and Pagan rather than Lovecraft. In this respect I think Uncle Mike's resin ghouls have captured the look and feel.

I wasn't hinting I have any in the works but I will be producing some at some point definitely

Yeah I really like Paul's figures although these aren't canine enough for HPL ghouls ;)

Hi,
the Heresy Ghouls are amazing minis, but to me they just don't shout HPL.
I also know though that that's just a matter of taste.
I think that the Heresy Ghouls would be fantastic for say a "Sawney Bean" scenario or maybe Cannibals in the Subway/Underground system.
Isn't there an older 1970s Brit horror film about cannibals in the Underground ala Sawney Bean?

take care.

The wargods figures are very similar to these old grenadier CoC figures but with proportionally smaller teeth, claws, hands etc. Probably true 25mm though...

I had a poster of that thing once. So long ago I can't even remember the title. All I recall is laughing like a drain when the scary creatures started shambling about yelling "Mind the doors! Mind the doors!"

Then Jim Morrison appeared and the screaming started....

It requires less mental effort to condemn than to think - Emma Goldman

These just don't strike me as Lovecraftian ghouls. Yes, they're very canine - but the description quoted above reads "vaguely canine" - I never really imagined them having manes and such...

I may be tainted by my first visual exposure to ghouls being the third edition Call of Cthulhu book, but this is my mental image of a ghoul:

(Sorry for the crappy pic - it was the only one I could find.)

And this (I had this poster hanging on my study wall for several years):

To each his own, eh?  :)
