ecw /wss terrain building questions..

Hello All
As the title says
i would like to attempt the above,however i only have a small room with a large discus fishtank to one side of the room
so i have 2 options open to me i think .
1/ 1800x80 narrow i know but that would allow to sit down and play off the dining table with ease.
2/ 1800x9.5 wider but allows walk around safely .
my idea would be to have a board that will accomadate 28mm ancient ecw wss on it ,also possible a few buildings etc.
so my questions to the think tanks on here are
Q can you game using the board length ways ?
Q what gaming can i expect to get out of these size boards ?
Q any other ideas you can suggest ?
