[Nap] Cord on back of cylindrical Hussar shako?
« on: August 20, 2010, 05:53:05 PM »
In Perry FN51, there is a Hussar with the later cylindrical shako. On the fig itself, there is a cord that runs from the top edge of the back of the shako and drapes down onto the fig's upper back.

What is this cord and what color should I paint it?

Thanks

I forget the name of the cord, but it is purely decorational. It is usually painted in the "lace" color of the regiment IIRC. You can sort of make them out in plates 72 and 73 here: http://www.grosser-generalstab.de/lh/lh.html

Thanks, Aaron.

You end up answering most of my Nap questions. Maybe I should just email you directly.  :D

The cord is simply there to prevent the loss of the shako if it becomes dislodged.  It started to disappear around 1805 when shakos began to be issued with chin scales.  There were two main types.  The figure from FN51 that is wiping his hair back has the simpler style that just loops around the neck.  The other figure, with his hand on his sword balanced on end, has the more complicated fixture.  It runs down his back, loops up under his right arm and is fastened to the front of his pelisse.  It ends in a feature called a 'flounder', a flattened portion of braid with a tassle.  You can see it hanging down just below his shoulder belt.

Considering these figures represent ADC's to various senior officers, the cord braid is probably gold.

The funny thing is, that the loop part is now used as a decorative feature on dress uniforms in many countries. No practical reason at all, it's just there. :)

A thing here, regarding disappearing features: When did hussars stop wearing their hair long and in braids (to protect from sword slashes)? Also at the time of the appearance of chin scales?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!
