With all the power plants used on the DC3 I now find myself wondering why this hasn't been tried in real life.

Because nobody is that mad? lol

In all likelyhood I'd think the airframe wouldn't be able to stand the stress.

Plenty of turbine powered DC 3's flying in the world whose wings haven't fallen off.

And I have seen photos of them taking off at McMurdo Base, Antarctica with JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) packs attached.

It is a pretty strong airframe.

Really, I knew they were sturdy but not that hardy!

If they can cope with that it probably explains why they are still flying today!

There are two things in aviation I am convinced of - when I die of old age 50+ years hence, somebody will still be operating C-47s for commerical service, and at least two B-52 airframes will still be in government service.
