For metals I use Nitromors, pour it into a glass jar and drop the models in, leave it for a few hours and then clean off with lots of water and an old toothbrush.

It's fierce stuff so you have to be really careful with it, not drip it on the fridge and leave melted spots in the plastic like I did.

Blackbirds in the garden seemed to do the job for my mother. Of course very few figs actually got that old, the blackbirds saw to that.

Dettol, Fairy Power Spray, Brake Fluid, Simple Green etc etc etc

There are quite a few threads about this kind of thing but like the Rev. I prefer good old Nitromors for use on metals. DO NOT use it on plastics though or you will not have a figure left.

The other upside to nitromors is that you can reuse that jar of goop a fair few times.

Now there is a new character idea, man transformed into a crazy criminal mastermind after a paint stripping accident.  :)

he could rage against a world were figure prices spiral and quest to regain the painting skill the freak accident robbed him of... now we need a name and an arch enemy.

Nitromors is a brand name for what?

EDIT: Got it! From British Medical Journal:

Quote
Nitromors is a household and industrial paint stripper whose active
ingredient is methylene chloride (CH2Cl2). It is reputedly harmless
in ordinary use, but methylene chloride is a halogenated hydrocarbon
and these compounds are a recognised cause of hepatic and renal
damage.' Inhalation of methylene chloride vapour may cause
pulmonary oedema2 and depression of the central nervous system.3
We report a serious multisystem disorder that followed exposure to
Nitromors and was complicated by the development of temporary
diabetes mellitus.

Vicious stuff.

I'm s**t scared of using nitromors. Seriously.

I really need to though, with some of my minis.

What are the key things needed? Obviously some hard wearing chemical gloves, some safety goggles?

I couldn't do it in the kitchen, my girlfriend would kill me. Would just a bowl of water be okay to 'rinse' them in, or is running water a real necessity.

Can someone run me through exactly what I would have to do as well.  :(

I use Dettol, the brown original stuff. Stick the figs and Dettol in a jar for a couple of days. Wearing rubber gloves I then take the figure out. Give it a good splash off washing up liquid and scrub with an old toothbrush. The Dettol turns the paint into a sticky paste then the washing up liquid seems to break it down. Sometimes you get some remnants stuck in deep grooves. You can pick these out with a toothpick or scalpel. Although one of those dentists picks would be the dogs.

For nitromors, I pick the minis out of the jar with needle nose pliers and scrub under running water with an old toothbrush.

Googles would be a good idea, I'll remember to wear mine next time.

While it's working, the jar stays outside the house.

Don't dispose of the jar of paint goop mixed with nitromors once you've stripped the models, you can reuse it quite a few times, just top up the jar as needed.

When it finally stops working, you're left with a jar of sinister chemical goop, best to put the lid on the jar and put it out in the rubbish.  I'm fairly sure there is no recycling available for chemical goop.

If you're living in an old monster movie the discarded goop may create a race of mutant super creatures bent on destroying the earth.

It's evil toxic stuff, but does such a great job.

In Sweden we are required to take these kind of non-degradable waste to the city recycling station. There was talk of requiring vendors to accept returns of used chemicals.
