Two more Commandos... (Update with more)
« on: 22 August 2010, 06:10:55 PM »
Started painting again and in order to warm up my eyes and brush hand and also to finally move on with my projects, I painted some Commandos. My Commandos have been up till now and will continue to be dipped. Yet, with the wonderful technique presented by SaxonDog (Must-visit: http://saxondog.blogspot.com/), one may have the best of both worlds. So, these were painted with their base coats, the Army Painter dip was applied like a glaze with the brush and then, a day later, highlights were applied. I wanted to have finished some more of these guys, but my new job is draining my will to live and paint. ;)

With this technique, each figure take me about 1,5-2 hours in total... I am a slow painter anyway, so that is perfect for me.

Great job on these Commandoes, the paint job is really clean. I really like that map!

Those figures look great. the detailing in your shading, the map, 4 o'clock shadow, and bases is very nice. Great work. Thanks for sharing!!

Again - very nice work (although the five o'clock shadows are a bit 'Ant Hill Mob'  lol)

I'm not an especially good painter, but I do recall some mention of dark blue being used for the 5pm shadow.

I think they look excellent though!  :)

I've heard dark blue works quite well although I've never tried it myself.
Thos are some great looking minis by the way.

Thank you!! :)

Concerning the 5 o'clock... I was given a tip by another painter (Lt. Hazel)... Foundry Charcoal and the Vallejo German Grey. Will try it asap!

ive always found mixing a little grey with the flesh tone works good for a stubbled look

For stubble/5 o'clock shadows, mix your base flesh tone with a neutral mid grey, (I use VMC london grey) and apply it in very thin (but avoid washing) coats, letting it dry in between coats, this way you can build up the desired intensity and vary it on different parts of the face where the hair may be denser.

With these I tried mixing the light flesh colour with Vallejo Basalt Grey. I guess I overdid the grey. I am definitely going to try hubbabubba's method. Thanks, guys.
