Miniatures without bases
« on: 01 September 2010, 01:18:18 PM »
Is it only me or anybody else do not like bases under figures? I know it's difficult without them but I made one unit. Models are glued in twos or threes. If anybody had similar idea please show pictures.

Hmm, radical.. But is it practical?

It's visually satisfying for the "games-as-lovely-dioramas" impulse, but seems that it would be irksome for the "games-as-playable-games" impulse. Having these small units sort of limits your tactical flexibility if you're playing small-scale skirmish games, and having troops based like that would be a royal pain when you're advancing or wheeling an entire unit.

Still, bases, especially really thick ones that never seem to match the terrain, cause me the most visual dissonance when I look at game pictures. And they make cars and doors look strangely low.
from Mr.Vampire: "It's the paintjob that makes the miniature fight harder not the size."

Filing down integral bases and using thin washers is my solution.

Genius. Never seen that method before! Obvious benefits but this approach would affect the usefulness for gaming. I'm with Hammers on this one, base your figs but make the bases as thin as possible using washers or coins.

I've also seen people use clear plastic bases.

Many years ago someone (was it Minifigs ? ) made 5mm Napoleonic figures in blocks without bases . The effect looked rather good .

As long as you're playing rules that require unit basing anyway, I think this is an exceptionally cool idea.

I game 1 figure = 1 man, so it won't work for me, but I can't see why it wouldn't be perfectly reasonable for any of the games requiring multiple figures per base.
Unless it's one of those games that requires a specific base size of course.

I'll admit, I always thought models looked nicer and more realistic without bases, but it would drive me nuts trying to keep them standing to be able to use them in games. I hate integral bases as it is, as most are useless, but none altogether almost ensures most will never stand. lol

I always pick my figures up by the base.
Decent "base work" enhances a nicely painted figure.   ::)

No.  He glues the figures together in groups of 2 or 3.
They will stand easily that way, and it's a cool idea if your chosen game uses groups like that.

Come to think of it, it would work for any game using base sizes since you could just set them on whatever base you want or need.

I find one of the more fun parts of painting miniatures is creating their bases...

I guess bigger units with 5 men in each group would work nicely.

That's what I do too.  Give the mini a bit more heft.

Filing down integral bases and using thin washers is my solution.
