Buccaneers 1650-1680
« on: September 07, 2010, 11:08:27 PM »
Hallo,

I was reading "Buccaneers 1620-1700" from Osprey and now I want to do some buccaneers from around 1650 to 1680. My Problem is, that the pictures in the book donīt show them as pirates, but more than irregular musketeers.

What 28 mm figures could I use for them?

Thank you to everyone answering!!!

Mark

Brigade Games' range Swashbucklers and Pirates is the solution. Their outfit  is really 17th century related.

I only painted some of them as Highwaymen

Some Swashbucklers can be turned into a dreadful captain

How many do you want?  As long as you want only a few figures for small encounters on the scale of Gloire/Under the Black Flag, or Savage Worlds, then you can pick and choose a few that look right.  If you want to stage larger battles, then you might need to buy a lot of Foundry packs.

Most of the Foundry figures from their Swashbuckling, pirates, 30 Years War, and English Civil War look fine for mid-17th Century.  For late in the 17th Century, those pirates still look good, and the Foundry Early Marlburians are good too, the ones with "informal tricorns" and 12 apostles (powder flasks on a bandolier), also described as matchlock men.  Dixon also has pirates and late 17th Century troops in "informal tricorns" and 12 apostles. Dixon also has a set of figures for Monmouth's rebellion, which are more informally clothed than the regular troops, and which often have open hands to allow a different weapons to be carried. Some might be usable for pirates or town militia. Dixon also makes pirates.

Short answer: Foundry and Dixon (both make high quality 17th Century figures)

Note: Front Rank is coming out with a late 17th Century line of troops, but the Front Rank figures are really bulky compared to the Dixon and Foundry figures.

With the pirate figures, you could remove the tricorne hats and replace them with floppy-brimmed alternatives or monmouth caps etc, easily modelled from putty such as green stuff. This will make them look far more suitable for the 1650s - 80s.

I think they fit well together especially against "characters"  from the Foundry range since those are already a tad bigger than the "rank and file" pirates within the range.

Here are two pictures for you. Note that the Front Rank figures are not based...

Thank you for your ideas, I think I'm going to use ECW figures from Perry.

They will probably fit.
