Scarab Miniatures compatibility
« on: 23 September 2010, 08:25:24 AM »
I recently purchased some British Special Units from Scarab's Project X range for a Quatermass project I'm cooking up. I want to use them alongside other Brits in berets (I'm thinking WWII airbourne) to create something like a 1950's UNIT.

Anyway, can anyone suggest a compatible manufacturer? Renegade maybe? I've already got some Foundry paras and there's no way they will work together.

Aren't Scarab 1/48? If so what about some Tamiya 1/48s?

Yep, read that bit after I ordered them  ::).

All of the other figures in my project are 28mm so I'm trying to figure out a way of blending in the Scarab figures I purchased. I've specifiaclly bought two Magnetron Gunners and I was thinking that if I could find some heroic scale 28mm Brit WWII airborne types I might just pull it off! If they were in a unit on their own I wouldn't have a problem but I want to mix them in with support troops.

I think North Star have 1:48 WW2 too.

**No they don't any more.

The Scarab ones are the North Star ones, Pentaro. They have acquired the ranges, both the vanilla WW2 and the Projekt X range.

I was going to suggest Victory Force, as I think they are 1/48, but they don't seem to do any Brits in their WW2 range (just US, Russian, German and a handful of Resistance types).

Edit: My mistake, they do:

Just no paras...

There's also Darkson Designs, but as they haven't made any Brits yet then it's a bit of a moot point.

Yeah, I should have checked first :D Monolith has commandos in berets advertised as "1:48 36mm-40mm", but I have never seen them in the flesh so I don't know it they're 1:48, 36 or 40mm :)

Scarab's PX and WWII figs are 1:48 scale, approx 35-36mm. Monolith's figs are 40mm and extremely bulky. Tamiya's 1:48 are smaller and very thin, almost more compatible with 28mm than 1:48.

Here's a photo comparison of 1:48 figures from Scarab (was North Star),left two; Tumbling Dice, middle two; and Tamiya, right:

It's like playing with AirFix H-O figs again! I thought the companies dedicated to proper scales actually used those scales nowadays, not like everyone who use xxmm...

Neil, have you looked at Chiltern Miniatures brits done by Jim Bowen I think, they always look big figures when I've seen them at shows, so they might work ok.

Thanks for your help chaps.

Aircav, I've seen the Chiltern Miniatures range in flesh and you're right they are on the heroic size. Methinks a sample pack will be ordered.

Technically, they have the Druid out.

We have 160 miniatures in the WW2 range, plus the Allies have recieved some reinforcements within the Projekt X range as well. Theres a  new para in a beret with silenced sten.

http://scarabminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=34_46&sort=20a&page=2

We have a commando pack in berets http://scarabminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=34_59&products_id=173 and by coincidence a 1/48th scale modeller has requested we do the heads separately so he can convert more of the range so we may well get round to that eventually/sooner time permitting.

And trundling along in the background is the Projekt X book itself, which no doubt would work nicely with Quartermass.

You can have a bit of fun with 1/48th gaming, it makes a good game on a small table and you can see some pics of mine here http://scarabminiatures.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=27
I fully accept I have a bias though  :D as I enjoy painting the models! I have just finished painting the first 8 SS in Autumn camo for the next outing of the game at SELWG on the 17th, hopefully I can get another 12 done in time.

Returning to topic Aircavs suggestion of Chiltern is not a bad alternative and the Renegade fellows are certainly big as well as I recall but I don't have any to compare.
Hope some of that helps
