Empire Spearmen for Kings of War
« on: 27 October 2010, 05:59:39 PM »
I have to admit that the kings of war (KoW) rules from Mantic are my latest favourite. So, I plan to use some unpainted plastic to build an army... Empire and Bretonnian figs will be put to use to create an army using the KoW elf and dwarf lists. I also plan to update my undead army as well...

Now units come in three sizes in KoW: troop (100mm by 40mm for foot), regiment (100mm by 80mm for foot), and hordes (200mm by 80mm for foot). Since the game doesn't require one to remove figures, I am doing an impetus/DBA/HotT style regiment base. Also, I want to have a Hordes of the Things (HotT) army as well, so I am building regiments using three or four bases...

Here's what I have so far, a regiment of Empire spearmen:

This is 60mm by 40mm, so it works for HotT. Poor Johann couldn't marry Astrid until he served a year in the militia; that was Astrid's father's requirement. Johann won't be coming home this time... Astrid's father was a shrewd ba***rd!

Arne doesn't make it, but this base is 40mm by 80mm. Arne was homeless, so joining the militia meant three meals a day, but not anymore.

Another 60mm by 40mm base for HotT as well as KoW. Dietrick (left) and Gerhart (right) were buddies for a long time. They had never been to war, but were quite excited about going. So excited that they insisted on being in the front ranks. Here we see Dietrick's startled and agonized expression as he realizes simultaneously that his best friend Gerhart just took an arrow in the neck and that he just took an arrow in the foot!

And they fit together to make a KoW regiment lie so:

Here are some close-ups:

First regiment down, five more to go!

Thanks

I was very tempted to use smaller scale minis to try out KoW, but realized that I have so many GW plastics in store, that I should really get some of those painted.

I then decided, that I want to be able to use the minis for skirmish games, too, and based individually them on round slottas - the extra 2.5/5 cm width won't have that big an impact, I think.

I also plan to use the Empire spearmen from a previous boxed edition of Warhammer at some point - I guess they might be the same as those you used.

I like the colour scheme, I think I'll be going for a red/white when/if I get that far...

You could base them on round GW slottabases and then use the GW LOTR movement trays for Kings of War...

Argonor, I saw your post and your project looks good :) I too recently put together some elves of the same period for a Hordes of the Things army... I don't have the stomach to expand them into a Kings of War army though :)

May I suggest you consider using four figures per row/rank instead of five? I have been thinking of using my Lord of the Rings figs for Kings of War, and I realized that four figs on 25mm bases will give the same width as five figs on 20mm bases. That way you have to paint one fewer fig per row/rank, and you have the same frontage as the rest of the KoW units on the table! In any case, I am looking forward to seeing your stuff when it comes along!

Thanks,
n.

I totally dig the old empire minis. And your paintjob is exquisite.

I love it.

And I want to know more about Kings of War. Could you be persuaded to give review or just a rundown of the basics?

(or point me in a direction where I can have the above?)

Ah yes, that's a possibility, too... I then will have some surplus figures (and it's not very likely that I'll find some more of the same type to fill out another unit - but still, a nice idea, shall have to consider that), though, but it will be easier to use other GW minis, as they often come in multiples of 4.

The painting and conversions are very nice, I'm not a big fan of the multiple bases as this regiment has the footprint and fighting prowess of 20 foot troops while there are only sixteen models of which four are wounded or dying.

That said, I think I read a bit too much about unit fillers for Warhammer fantasy. And Like I said, the painting and conversions are very nice, the backdrop too BTW 8)

Loverly figures and basing.

Warbases now do multiple bases that fit 2p coins. I recently got some for my IM stuff and they are very good.

Well, with the rules actually handling units/unit bases, with no use for counting individual models, I think anything goes as long as noone can be in doubt, what kind of unit a base/group of bases is depicting (which is pretty much defined by the area occupied by the unit).

Such a unit might not be sanctioned in a 'strictly RAW, official-by-the-book Mantic tournament', but, hey, just like with Warhammer, how many of the games played by the majority of gamers are actually going to be part of such an event?

As I mentioned earlier, KoW could just as well be played with 10 or 15 mm scale figures (even with 6 mm if one should wish so), as only the relative size of bases would really impact on the game.

Personally, I don't like multi-figure bases for 28 mm, even as it seems to become a trend lately, with KoW, Crossfire, Impetus, and other, but every man his cake  :)

I think the open beta rules should be available as free download from Mantic's site any day soon. I can't tell if the closed beta can still be downloaded, but I guess not, as the open beta will be the standard for a while, as they gather feedback for updates. There has been some changes, especially regarding the Undead.

And if this post is already completely outdated, I apologize - I haven't had time to keep myself updated on this...

Whoa! Someone needs to see a dentist!  lol

But seriously, these look great. I like the green/yellow scheme (although I normally dislike that combo). The bases really have character to them.

There's a bunch of video interviews w/ the people from Mantic (makers of Kings of War) on the Beasts of War channel on youtube. Here's the first of 4 or 5 vids:

They're kinda long, but it's neat to be able to hear from straight from the designer.
