Some AWI Terrain Inspiration Photos

Every year my wife and I take a few days and go up to New England. This year we returned to Concord/Lexington and for the first time I walked the battle road from Concord to Lexington. Here are just a few photos from it.

This is a shot of the Battle Road that the British marched on. It is just past Hartwell's Tavern and before the Bloody Angle.

A livestock pen/corral next to the tavern. I have never seen the combination of stone wall and split rail fence, so thought it would help with terrain building.

Got some more of different angles of the tavern. But most of the trail is fairly empty.

What is interesting is that there are far more trees along the road now then there were during the war. Most of the treelines were actually fields at the time of the battle.

The trail itself is well-preserved and if you go during the off-season, quite empty. There are markers along it showing several spots of interest (where skirmishes took place, where Revere was captured, etc.) I have a photo of one of the markers that were quite numerous that say simply, "A British soldier lies buried near here." We walked from Concord to Lexington along the trail and then biked from Lexington to Cambridge along another. I think the whole combination of trails is about 15-20 miles.

Nice shots. They also have those combination stone and rail fences at Gettysburg. Makes sense if you live in a rocky area. You pile all the stones you plow up on the field borders and if you don't get enough to make it high enough to keep the local deer and livestock out you supplement it with a couple of rails.

Thanks for posting them. I was only looking at the 28mm model of The Hartwell Tavern by Grand Manner quite recently as I was thinking of making something similar in 15mm.

I understand the bit about the trees (most of them look wind blown) but would the road have the low stone boundary?

From everything posted along the road, the low walls did indeed exist along the road and in some places was actually higher than what it is now.
