Terrain Inspiration - Spanish Missions
« on: June 21, 2009, 09:55:52 PM »
Found this site while searching for pictures of Spanish architecture.

http://www.missionsofca.com/index.html

The kits look like they might actually be in scale, but that's based only on the measurements on the instructions. If they are not the pictures on the site are still and inspiration and will prove useful for designing layouts and such for your own projects.

Living in southern California, it seems these kits are everywhere. Some are in scale for 28mm, and a couple of others would be fit for 15/20mm. Some of the original missions where very small, and many of the kits would look a bit strange on the table. Pegasus hobbies also does a lot of accessories for mission dioramas, including priests, indians, cactus, wells and wagon wheels, though most of their items are in a "toy" scale. It is somewhere between 1/48 and 1/32nd.

Hmmm. If you look at the instructions, they are quite simple, undetailed kits. One should be able to use the instructions as a template for making your own from scratch and getting a result that looks really good.

My thought was that the styro used could be given a covering of card to add some strength to it, some window and door details as well and some filler compound for texture. I also thought of the template idea, but mainly it's quick and dirty terrain that would require just a little cosmetic work to look good on the table.

Ah the madness! Damn, now i got to make another trek to Micheal's.  :-)
Now only if the instructions had the measurements of each piece i would be in lazy heaven. :-)

If some kind soul buys a few of these could you measure the kit up and do some plans for those of us on the other side of the world that they don't ship to.

Rob,

If you haven't already, I would look for the Gary Chalk articles from Wargames Illustrated. They will provide you with some very basic plans for building Spanish structures including a church. They are easily adapted to larger and more creative projects.

They should provide you with all you need to get started.

Yep I have scans of those plans. Been meaning to build the church to go with my pirate town for ages now. I just need to get into terrain mode again. I ran out of room to put the things so was forced to stop.

I personally like it when you get into "terrain" mode. Hell i like it when you get into "paint and modeling" mode as well. Just get off the "twitter" mode. I dont like that one.  :-)
